Semantics.

Nationality only means belonging to a nation-state (as permanent resident or as citizen). Ethnicity adds culture and custom.

American is NOT an ethnicity. If I NEED to stress my ethnicity, I can add a hyphen in front.

i dunno. if you're going with what neanthumain says with culture and customs, we do have quite a bit of our own ethnicity going and ethnicity originating to specific regions too (and different interpretations in different places).

The idea is most Americans have had several generations of ancestors living here and are a mix of heritages that no longer bear on them culturally.

Is "Mexican" an ethnicity? Is "Canadian" an ethnicity?

There have been so many ethnic Canadians coming across the border to take advantage of our devalued dollars and shop.

Maybe our next project should be to build a wall between Canada and the US, to keep American ethnicity pure.

I think modern America is to diverse to have it's own ethnicity. Mexicans have their own ethnicity because they are a blend of both Spanish and Native ancestry and have created a distinct group unique to both. Currently interracial people are far to rare to be considered an ethnic group in their own right. If say, half of the country was interracial then we could say an American ethnicity exists.

America was never ethnically pure to begin with. Like us, you are a nation of immigrants. The Indian Nations would have an interesting perspective on "ethnic purity."

If you’re going to call people racist, you ought
to be willing to say specifically what it is about them
that you consider racist.

If you find yourself unable to do this, you should
at least have the common decency to admit that you
are talking out your ass and spouting nothing
more than hot air

Careful; Alex has already ruled that folks who don't cotton to folks of other nationalities are racists. Proceed at your own risk.

Nationalities?

so for instance Australians who "dont cotton to" Americans,
are racist?

I believe that the universal definition of the term "racist"
would have more to do with people who "dont cotton to"
certain "races" being racist.

The country a person of a particular race comes from
should have nothing to do with it.

Nationalities?

Yep. I posted this picture last year. It's "Zwarte Piet" (Black Pete), Dutch Santa's helper. He's a bumbling slave who's always portrayed by a white person in blackface, with a fro and big red lips.

By my pointing out the racist nature of this Dutch tradition, Alex accused me of being a racist. 8O

I'll assume you're trying to be funny.

I'd say "Any nation that can portray black people this way should at least have the decency to feel ashamed for it."

I did not *invent* this tradition; I was merely drawing attention to appallingly racist traditions that folks might not be aware of. Don't believe me? Here are 68,000 more "Zwarte Piet" images: http://images.google.com/images?q=%22zw ... a=N&tab=wi

I love America! I love all the beautiful people that make up America. I respect the rights of Americans to think and process information in their native languages, and to hold on tight to all of the beautiful customs and traditions they brought here. I love Kwanza. I love Christmas. I love St. Patrick's Day, and the Fourth of July. And Teddy's rotting corpse can kiss my ass! I didn't vote for him! I wasn't born yet! Gotta problem with that? Inhale my hot air, pal!

while you're busy appointing yourself "ambassador to planet earth" and celebrating its obsolete third world history and customs, the rest of us Americans will strive to find the common ground between our many different ethnicities by forging ahead in this the 21rst century and bridging the gaps that separate us from understanding each other better. The English language is at the very core of this process, as should be all things intrinsically American. Why? because we live in America and America, like it or not, is the capital of the world. Dont forget to celebrate Bastille Day.
