I don't understand what you mean by "useless". We must act to perform as circumstances demand. We choose because we are driven by our desires and understandings. There is nothing "free" about it. And there is nothing to get upset about. It's just the way life is.

Satre thought it was only bad faith and fear that kept us mentally chained similar to platos cave.
If deteminalism is true then everything is as a result of moral luck so non dangerous inmates should be set free and the dangerous ones given treatment in comfortable hospitals with cable.Its not there fault think this is incompatableism.

There has been very little rational consideration of the functions and results of prison systems for thousands of years and very little progress in how to sensibly deal with crime and punishment. It's mostly driven by revenge motivations.

Neither one seems very practical. Viciously motivated people can deal with two cheeks just as well as with one. Something a bit more effective is required. I have no idea what it might be but it is worth the search.
