Christians probably often think "If I get killed by terrorists, I'll get to go to heaven for my services to *hic* America!" Atheists know that when they die, it's the end.

I think that kind of thinking is pretty gnarly and tends to be few and far between. As in I don't think Christians in the military like the idea of killing, they like the idea of doing what has to be done and taking responsibility to protect the greater good (which I'd imagine is the exact same reason for an atheist as well). Though, most Christians are agnostics as well; ie. there's probably far more secular Christians in the military than say Pentecostals or 7th Day Adventists.

He who joyfully marches to music rank and file, has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would surely suffice. This disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at command, how violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would rather be torn to shreds than be a part of so base an action. It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder.

I wish everyone thought like he did, were that the case we wouldn't need it.
