I think that some men who are lonely would pay to have a dinner companion that actually acts interested in what the man has to say,and they are not texting on their phone during the meal.
From what I understand, the most accomplished geishas were valued for their intelligence, wit, conversational skills, and artistic ability, and of course their beauty. They didn't have to sleep with the client necessarily.

There is a petition pertaining to the decriminalization of sex work related to a recent decision in Canada. It is of a particular interest to those from that country, though those on different sides in countries around the world have signed similar petitions.

It is legal for the moment, though all activities surrounding it are not which is the reason for the current situation.

I would not assume that person was a female or that person was beaten by a pimp. I wouldnt even assume it was a prostitute, but I don't believe prostitution should be illegal either.

hmm part of me wonders whether this should be an adults only topic. Since discussion is somewhat lmited by the obvious. However I would say that it should probably be made legal as the consequences of illegality fuels an entire empire of drug smugglers peddlers and creates untold levels of misery. Its impossible to regulate and its a thankless task.

There is one thing Dennis Hof and I have in common.
We are only interested in prostitutes.

To me the answer is obvious.

When something is economically profitable somebody wants the piece of the cake. They do so by "regulating" or "prohibiting".

I think tariff, income tax, sex works, porn, drugs, and spices in ancient time has something in common. People want it. So somebody would make more money by prohibiting it and take cuts.

In Indonesia, cow import is prohibited. The price of cows is twice the price of cows at other places. So? So the few that are importing it have higher margin. Imagine if cow import is legal, then no margin.

The same with drugs. Ecstasy pills cost $2 to produce, and sells for $40. Make it legal and price drops. That means politicians and cops get less.

Prostitution? Same thing. We want sex. So government says yea you got to get married first, or these are the regulation.

Sex outside of marriage is not illegal in the West.

Sex outside marriage is not illegal in the west. But it used to be illegal or very frowned upon. In fact, I think the #1 christianity commandment is not to have sex outside marriage.

While sex outside marriage is not illegal, many alternatives outside marriage is indeed illegal.

Prostitution is one. Then contract marriage is also illegal.

I mean yea right. Don't make something illegal. Just prohibit so many alternatives.

Actually why would anyone bother getting married anyway? So they can file tax return together? Does that even that motivational?

Prostitution is legal in New Zealand and has been for some time. I think you claimed somewhere that if prostitution was legal no-one would marry? Not so. Many marriages are conducted in New Zealand every year and this continues just as before.

As to your question concerning why people marry, it is a public statement of commitment. You believe in free will, I assume, and that is the exercise of theirs.

Exchange money or goods for sex is rarely illegal. That is impossible to police.

Soliciting or curb crawling what is usually is illegal.

It's illegal because we like sticking our noses into other people's lives, preferably helping make their lives hell in the process, and prostitutes seem to make particularly easy targets.
