i'm atheist. more poeple would rather a gay black jewish woman as president than me...i'm pretty sure my discrimination is just returning in kind (do unto others as they do unto you).

And the whole mess wouldn't have been created if it hadn't been for the nationalist imbecility following the revolutions. Why nationalism? Sure. It's just a bit stupid to set yourself up for failure, and all they're really doing is creating a pretext for conflict. It'll be their own doing when a few English-speakers decide to pursue the same nonsense. When they were trying to learn English, they were cute. When they didn't bother learning it, they were losers, but they could be forgiven. When they decided to show outright scorn for the English language, though? Oh, buddy, they just stepped into a field full of landmines. Hey, for future reference, I was one of the people promoting intercultural dialogue, just so you don't send me any stray looks when everyone has gotten their panties into a bind over this crap. I, personally, don't care, but I know for a fact that it'll all end in tears. History shows it again and again.

All it would really mean to me is having to learn a bit of Spanish, and multilinguals tend to live longer. Why the Hell you think I'm bothered? I'm watching all this, and I'm thinking 'hehehe, what a bunch of weiners.'

While America is one of the few modern nations that does not make it's citizens learn more than 3 other languages before graduation, I agree we could do well to be more multi-linguial. But, America has spoken english for hundreds of years, and it's our national language, not to mention international business language.
I think hispanics need to learn a bit of english before we learn more spanish. This isn't a racist comment at all. If I moved to Mexico I would gladly take up learning Spanish. It's a mere matter of having respect for the culture of the nation your living in and making an effort to adopt to it. That does not mean they have to give up their own culture either.

Though I will admit the reason it bothers me is because many Americans, myself included, do not know Spanish, we know English. And it makes things excessively difficult when we can't even take their orders in restaraunts, or conversate on how to get jobs done at work sites like when I used to ride a forklift over at the the RVC center.

We don't have any such thing. We never declared one, officially. One of the states, I think New Mexico, has two official languages, and I think most states never bothered to instate even one.

That's what they're saying in parts of the country in which they're the dominant part of the population. If you want to argue with them, feel free to go there and do so. Get a black guy to translate for you. They usually know some English. I learned this from getting lost repeatedly in Miami-Dade.

If you moved to some parts of South Florida, though, you'd be in the same condition. Why are you trying to tell them to learn English? If you stop to get something to eat, by the way, the word for water is agua. Don't ask for agua, no matter how many people stare at you. If they continue playing dumb, ask for it in German. If someone tries to correct you, butcher the pronunciation as comically as possible. It's a fun way to annoy petty people. If I were eating at a diner that did the same thing to speakers of Spanish, they would probably receive the same treatment, and I would laugh in their faces. The Good Lord put ignorant people on this Earth for the explicit purpose of making my life more amusing.

The contents of that culture change when they become a part of it, though. Sorry, dude, but that's how it is.

Yes. This is why you go out of your way to annoy petty people in Miami-Dade who think you should give up yours just because you've become the minority. I don't mind either way which language they speak, but it's all the more pleasure for me if speaking English gets their panties in a bind. If you're working a SERVICE job at a restaurant in an area in which a fair proportion of people may not be native to the dominant language, part of your job as a SERVICE employee is to give them the SERVICE of being conversant in their native tongue. If you can't do this, you fail as a service employee. Shame on you. This is the same in an area that is 25% English as it is in an area that is 25% Spanish. I can be forgiving if you aren't fluent because I've also worked a crap job I was barely equipped to do, but I will not tolerate willfully discourteous and snide behavior from someone I'm expected to tip. I have left without paying over lesser offenses. If I were to do that with a person who just flew in from Venezuela to visit his nephew, I'd lose respect for him if he didn't take it up with the management and cost me my job. It's called a "service job" for a reason.

Anyway, the reason we got off on this tangent was that this country wasn't made for one race, culture, religion, or, case in point, sexual orientation. Everyone belongs here who can conduct themselves civilly and lawfully. I seriously think the only sort of person who doesn't belong here are those who can't handle that idea. If you can't live with the concept of your neighbor having the same rights, privileges, and obligations as yourself, get on the first boat leaving the country because this makes you more alien to our values and heritage than a person who doesn't speak the majority language. I don't have any tolerance for a bigot, and I don't have any patience for pettiness. Your culture doesn't mean jackshit when it comes to determining the rights of others.

debating immigrants is stupid and boring. we should encourage immigrants to come, help them learn english and welcome them to the fold.


but i also agree with what my grandma told me about my immigrant ancestors....they learned english and tried to speak only english and didn't talk about italy because they were americans now. culturally...they were still italian...but they were american....you know?


anyways, gays should have every right of a straight person...it's just a disgusting shame that most people are ignorant and still view homosexuals as sexual predators to watch their children around.

You know, Ska, I'm happy to say I've never actually encountered that point of view. Maybe a few Baptists have this attitude, but I take care not to associate with those raving loonies. At worst, we're just seen as flighty-witted fruits. This is still irksome, but it's a switch from being slapped with a purse.

North Carolina. Nobody here really gives a smack either way. Getting people up here to care about the issue is like getting Stephen Hawking to get up and do the Mambo. North Carolina will have gay marriage when they're completely certain they're going to be counted as "late in the game." We have "First in Flight" on our bumper plates for a reason: it's the only thing in history we've ever been first at.

Oh, Georgia doesn't count. As part of my development plans, I am going to be having it brought below sea level and flooded. We'll sell anyone who happens to be living on it to the chinks, whom I'm sure would dine upon them with great gusto.

No, dude, folks in NC don't really care about anything other than the marriage issue, then not by much. They've been affected greatly by Billy Graham. He's generally been skillful at keeping things in their proper perspective.
