Whoever told you that was either an idiot, or a liar.

You cant possibly actually believe something this stupid. That the Japanese war machine was afraid of American ranchers with shot guns.

Japan never invaded Canada either. And Canada is closer to Japan, and has both less population, and a smaller army than the US, AND has gun control.

And Japan never even invaded the mainland of Alaska either -even closer to Japan than Canada. And it wasnt because they were afraid of Alaskan civilians with hunting rifles.

The Pacific is twice as wide as the Atlantic. So it would have been twice as hard for Japan to project power across it as it would have been for Hitler to invade the US east coast. And Hitler never attempted that either.

Japan conquered a vast territory at the start of the war, but (long story short) was stopped by the US in the mid pacific at the Hawaiian islands, and at the Aleutian islands (that extend eastward from Alaska) in the mid Pacific. So the Japanese army and navy never got within three thousand miles of the US mainland, and therefore never even got to within striking distance of the US mainland with any even distant staging area, and therefore never even got to the point of planning any serious invasion of the US mainland with large armies, and therefore its highly unlikely they ever even thought about Montana ranchers shooting buckshot at their army tanks. So I cant believe this fable of your's that Tojo was all set to invade California one day, but was quaking in his boots because he was afraid Roy Rogers was gonna gun down Tojo's legions at the OK Corral.

This is why I think the whole notion of Freedom of Speech (and in fact the 231-year-old US Constitution) needs to be revisited and possibly replaced. I don't see anything unpatriotic about thinking it's time for another Constitutional Convention. In that same 231 year period, most Western nations have probably had several constitutions, along with modernizing other aspects of their society such as official systems of measurement. I no longer see a need to support the "right" of people to publicly (albeit anonymously) express such blatantly absurd statements as "truth" and expect other members of the group to respect them.

In the old days, you could write anything you wanted in a Letter to the Editor but the Editorial staff decided whether it got published. You could stand on a street corner carrying a sign stating some crazy belief about who "really" controls the newspaper (some guy did this in Baltimore for years if not decades) but the public had the right to ignore you.

With today's communications, this just isn't working anymore.

@naturalplastic if this shocks you then blame yourself, your last post was so eloquent it inspired me to rant.

Well, they did do that thing with the explosive/incendiary balloons, which was about as effective an attack as you'd expect, but arguably it was...something?

Thanks for actually thinking more about that statement, guys. Of course it now does seem like a ridiculous legend upon further investigation. If I had looked it up I would've caught it myself (sometimes I look things up, sometimes not), history isn't my strong point.

Claim rated false: https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2 ... us-becaus/

But regardless...that was also a very long time ago. The law itself was most relevant when the constitution was written, but look how many years have passed. I feel people are living in the past by holding onto this antiquated amendment with their cold-dead fingers. It has become tired and annoying.

Notice how when you mention "amendment", especially conservatives make it sound like it's something as holy as...the bible...there was even one of the speakers in the RNC (I almost made it through the first day of speeches), who said that although America isn't perfect, American ideals are. Presumably the second amendment is one of those ideals. Gimme a break.

Yeah once you start worshiping the Constitution as holy Scripture, you've gone from Democracy to Theocracy.

The only reason that we Americans havent been enslaved by the armies of Kim Jong Un is because the North Korean army is afraid of the Bloods and Crips!

The Bloods and the Crips both had MUCH more firepower per capita then the farmers and ranchers of California had in 1942. The later only had single shot hunting rifles. The Bloods and Crips do drive bys with automatic rifles.

So... we need to erect a statue to Raymond Washington, the inner city gangster who founded the Crips, for his heroic work in upholding the Second Amendment, and for him keeping America free from North Korean enslavement!

Well..a nation's constitution IS a kind of necessary secular scripture. Uber laws. Laws to govern other laws to maintain democracy.

But that doesnt mean that we dont get stuck with things that are arguable archaic, but that modern interest groups will exploit and maintain at the expense of everyone else.
