Some random thoughts on the matter:
There was some Inca nobleman who, about to be executed by the Spaniards, was asked whether he wished to be baptised so that he would go to heaven. He asked whether Christians went to heaven; after hearing that they did, he refused to convert.
In Sartre's 'le Diable et le Bon Dieu' one of the characters, after witnessing the awful death of a friend, speaks to God saying that she turns against him, and that any number of years in his heaven would not make her forget her friend's anguish. She tells others that, if God is inflicting such suffering on her people, then she will give herself to the Devil.
A relative of mine used to say he hoped for hell, because there he could meet all the ballerinas he fancied, while his boring, pious aunts would be in heaven.
But, going back to the original topic, I am an atheist rather than an agnostic for the same reason I don't believe in pink elephants/the Tooth Fairy/etc, even though I cannot prove they do not exist: Occam's razor (the fewer things you assume a priori exist/are true, the better).
