Quote:
Religion isn't a very efficient meme now that we are so used to investigating things and generating countless alternate models (to the religious ones) with *useful* consequences. There will be less and less people who believe it (proportionally) simply because those that stick to it will be increasingly limited in an exponentially advancing technological age. The religion may adapt, but if it keeps adapting it's kind of a paradox to itself. If it doesn't adapt then higher and higher proportions of people will just go looking for something that can actually lead to improvements. Religion in general was useful for humans all the way until approx. Newton, but it's been an obstacle to human progress ever since then to be honest.

Scientific method homes in on the truth very slowly (assuming there is one truth) in a whole universe of possible truths, whereas a religion is just picking one and sticking with it. Religion has an infinitely vast chance of being wrong (with no chance to improve on that guess) vs Science which has a 100% chance of eventually getting it right. So even if you don't believe in god but only what scientific method suggests, then there's no need to worry about not going to heaven (for example), because if heaven does exist, it still turns out you're were believing in it after all.

I was warning GB about eternal damnation. I wasn't threatning him.

What's the point? I see Christians warning of damnation to nonbelievers all the time. But damnation is part of the faith, and if they don't believe in it, what is the purpose of saying that?

Why issue a warning for disbelieving if the warning only hits home if you believe?

What did God do with people who were simply unable to hear His 'good news' until long after the death of Jesus Christ due to geographical inconvenience? (e.g., Norsemen, Polynesians, whatever)

What did God do with all those people who died before the time of Jesus Christ?

Your idea has a lot of holes in it.

I increasingly prefer the gnostic solution, where YHWH, who created the world, is the evil demiurge Yaldaboath who stands between us and the salvation of the most high God Bythos.

I am fully aware that it is perfectly useless to apply reason to puzzle out the inconsistencies of religious faith but I have a bit of free time this morning and I might as well present my confusion in understanding one bit of accepted theology

It seems that if one does not accept some religious fundamentals a merciful God will cast one to eternal torture after death. This is an understandable and perhaps theologically useful threat to the living to persuade them to declare their acceptance of these beliefs but declaration of a belief does not indicate an inner conviction. That requires some fundamental change of understanding and acceptance that a stimulated fear, no matter how great, certainly does not bring about. And a threat of such huge proportions without an accompanying persuasion of a correct view of the universe is a strange action from one assumed to be universally kind and forgiving.

Within human culture torture is a tool used to gain a response. It is an attempt to gain information or social conformity and if it is successful the individual subjected to the cruelty then conforms to social requirements. This is the concept behind sending someone to prison since the experiences has, if anything, negative educational effects and is only meaningful if it contains a future threat of continuance.

But a dead soul that is promised no alleviation of its horrible circumstance no matter what is obviously gaining nothing by a change of attitude. Living people who have been tortured have related that, in the end, they will do anything to make the torture stop. A soul promised only endless torture whatever their change of attitude seems more the subject of endless vengeance rather than someone undergoing an educational process. A God intent only on endless vengeance, frankly, has very little appeal to me. I wonder why people profess love for such a monster.

Ugh, you ignorant Christians warn us all the time, I think we get the point now after about 50,000 times of you repeating it, you believe Zeus is going to damn us to the underworld for disbelieving in him and his son Heracles, you don't need to keep on repeating it, it's annoying. We don't believe in Zeus or Heracles because there's no evidence of either existing or even a record of either except in your very questionably translated book which in itself is full of countless contradictions and flat out lies so for me to put my faith in such a text would be foolish. If Heracles wants to save my soul he can stop being such a lazy ass and come down here and get it. I think GB knows what eternal damnation is and I think you knew damn well he knew so no need to keep repeating yourself.

Yes, yes, that's why I'm not going to press the argument any further. The uselessness of warning a non-beliver about eternal damnation ... is not lost on me. I am as not as clueless as you might think. I am a realist.

If your serious, I envy you. I believe in god but I want to ask him why he never made it easier for me to believe when I get to heaven. Seriously I know people who had god speak to them, talk to them, send angels to them. What makes them so special? /rant
