Huh? My outsider (and thus objective) impression is that theocrats have gained power over American in the latest years. I don't think the current republican candidates would have had ground to cover 15 years ago.

Yeah, but that doesn't mean religion is taking a lesser role in politics. The opposite, in fact.

The GOP pander to the religious making religion become corrupt politics and religion don't mix I support seperation from church and state.

Inherently they would at least be center-right politically under the statute 'thou shall not have any God but me' and to that extent statism becomes not only idolatry but something that even coerces and even bans religion in some cases.

It just really never seems fair to demonize a entire group when not every christian jew or muslim agree with the same issues.

Right, and I know there are leftists of every religion and every walk of life (it seems to be their first order of business above and beyond culture anyway) so I won't blame religion for leftism either.

People just always seem to blame religion when human beings as a whole have been around longer then any religion.

While I think that human beings invented religion, I still have hope that they will eventually "see the light."

Seriously, I don't think religion is the only cause for the world's problems. I think the world would be better off if people used reason instead of faith to guide their actions. Knowledge is also very important to make wise decisions.

I quit reading this thread at about page 9. Many of the posts seemed to show a confusion about terminology. In case no one else posted this, I will tell those who do not know what the difference is between an atheist and an agnostic. I was confused about this at one point.

Theism is the belief in a god (or gods.) Atheism is the lack of belief in any gods.

Gnostics claim to know that a god (or gods) exist. Agnostics do not claim to know that a god (or gods) exist. Some agnostics would claim that it is impossible to ever know such a thing.

Most atheists (even Richard Dawkins) are agnostic atheists. They have a lack of belief in any gods, but if enough evidence were presented that a god existed, they would become theists. They would then believe in a god's existence. Depending on the evidence, they could continue to be agnostic about the certainty of any god's existence.

Once I learned the difference between atheism and agnosticism, I realized that I have been an agnostic atheist for quite some time.

The problem with calling oneself an agnostic atheist is that most religions have all of these bases covered. If I admit to them that I believe there may be an unknown God and simply call him the Creator... well then, that happens to be their god. So there really is no word or name I can give this possible god that will not be hijacked by theist terminology... It's pretty fricken annoying actually...

The trouble with that is people say much more incendiary things than that on a regular basis here and get away with it. It wouldn't be fair to hit him with something that, technicaly - from that viewpoint, would seem correct and is related to an idea rather than a member. Saying another member is a narcissistic prick wouldn't fly well but saying Yahwah, Allah, or Ahura Mazda, and its really under attacking ideology.

I have much nostalgia for Zoroastrianism... One of the world's largest religions, and almost extinct!

It just seems they have no problem attacking people who are religious but when we try to have civil conversation abut their beliefs they get on the offensive talk about Irony huh.

I didn't read any attack on religious people. I read a criticism of religion. That is the whole idea of this forum: to debate such things.

You don't view calling god a prick dick ect as a attack against people that worship God. BTW some people view believeing in God as a state of mind.

This thread is for atheists, others are welcome, as some preach the hellfire that awaits atheists and nonbelievers, we have the right to criticize gods... If their are really sky wizards out there, let them sky miracle us to death.

That's why I think Jim Gaffigan's joke about being Catholic meaning that you don't have to read the bible holds so much truth. Many just go to hear heart-warming, fuzzy, and uplifting antics for an hour a week and for the cookouts and picnics. Its the whole upper-middle class yuppy culture club really and they cut the pages of the bible to strings of paper dolls essentially because they're keeping what they want of it and wholesale throwing out the stuff that gives them any cognitive dissonance.

Like I said, they all only pretend to believe! No one actually does... well maybe a few of them that are traumatized into it... otherwise it is just a country club where people take their kids so they can scare the sh't out of them.

It is just an abstract argument... The government wants to keep people from breeding and sterilize people against their will for population control and to cut down on the number of aspies being born. The churches are saying government doesn't get to make that decision and they should make it instead by telling those people to never have sex or to become priests and believe in their BS for real. It's about time the people who were the focus of legislation knew what it was actually about and got angry about it and took to the streets... The government is supposed to fear the people here in the US remember?

I wouldn't be surprised if most church goers didn't really believe. Few want to say that the Emperor has no clothes. There are often repercussions for coming out of the closet as an atheist. I understand that a poll in the US showed atheists to be about the least trusted group. Hopefully, the Reason Rally will be a step toward reducing that perception. I know that many other countries have evolved beyond that type of thinking.
