The concept of a fetus as being the same as a person is a fairly modern concept. Almost everywhere else, you're not considered a person until you're born and take your first breath.

Which shows just how bogus the notion of fetus is a person position is.

They couldn't test for brain activity until modern times.

That doesn't matter to you.

I still think Inuyasha should sit like a good boy (like in the anime). I don't see him winning this debate.

Note to anyone concerned. When Inuyasha says 'Brain activity' he means "electricity in neurons in the area of the brain". Something that is not sentience or anything.

Besides, to make a leap from 'brain activity' to personhood, you would need to prove that brain activity makes you a person. It is easy for me to assume that it may be necessary but it is hardly sufficient. Bunnies, dogs and many other things seem to have brain activity. In fact, I wonder if a rat can show more complex brain usage than a fetus. Considering that fetus shows random neuron connections whereas a dog has actual documented usage of specific brain areas in problem solving.

Oh and of course, zygotes don't show brain activity either, so if Inuyasha is for now relying only on that argument, then it should clearly be legal to abort before the development of the brain, at least.

And "processing power" also doesn't mean anything about sentience or actually processing.

I can't believe this argument is still going. I remember those abortion threads from like two months ago. Inuyasha must really, really love repeating the same points, because other than a few players in this argument, it is almost literally the exact same... :P

Some of us have taken to just sitting back and watching... although the discussion keeps circling around, I'm starting to get dizzy :compress:

I really don't have the energy for this argument anymore  cave_canem, you poor thing, I got pretty dizzy too, had to lie down for a while
I will say though that a PET scan should be done of a fetus in womb to just determine whether there is brain activity in detail. Inuyasha is likely (correctly so) going to bring up restrictions on harm/invasiveness, so I suggest that it be done on a fetus that has no hope of living anyways (due to some genetic disorder, or something), but is still developing in a semi-normal manner (if that is possible, as I suspect).
Or perhaps, of a fetal higher-primate? Are the developmental cycles similar? Anyone?
Electrical activity is simply not good enough to prove there is sentience...

Do you ever feel yourself hemorrhaging IQ points trying to engage someone in an actual thought process?
