Interesting about the abortion stats.

Reminds me ... (original research follows) :D
In 1996-7 guns were being blamed for high rural suicide rates (higer level of guns in rural communities). I got stats off the Australian Bureau of Statistics web site (www.abs.gov.au) for levels of farm income. If you graph the change in farm incomes, you get a graph that looks like a sine wave. Put over the top the change in suicides, you get an inverse of the graph with a very high correlation. As farm income goes up, suicides go down and vica versa. Seems intuitive.

The level of farm income did not seem important, but the change. In the Great Depression, there seemed to be less suicide. My take on that is that when you think others are suffering with you, its easier to take. When you think others are enjoying prosperity in the cities, its harder for people in rural communities to take.

As someone with aspie traits, I can appreciate that. It seems harder if you think you are the only one.

I shared this piece of info with politicians, psych departments of universities and the AMA, but no-one was interested. They were happier blaming guns.

We are now in a bad drought, si I expect rural suicide will increase and guns will get the blame again.

That's just the sad kind of thought I really needed during my necrophobic depression....

It seems to be a tragic correlation....

It's not a crime to commit suicide. If you have a c****d gun law, then, of course, the gun will be in a legal kind of vaccum between the time you blow your head off and the cops come to get the remains.

(Yes, this was hard but not that seriously ment.)

I didn't want to write it out, because I've already written it so many times. You know what I mean.

A while back, someone said that guns being legal made them easier to get hold of.

Consider this:

In England, because no-one ever bothered to repeal it, there is a law (All English males over the age of 14 are to carry out 2 or so hours of longbow practice a week supervised by the local clergy.) that makes longbows not only legal but technically mandatory for certain places to have.

However, it is next to impossible to obtain a longbow from shops.

All muzzle loaders made before 1890 are free to buy in Sweden and so is the gun powder, percussion caps etc, if you buy them separately. Theoretically one could by an old revolver that is loaded with black powder and bullets separately.

Oh, I just get angry over these idiotic gun laws.

Same here. Also firearms made for obsolete cartridges are not required to be licenced. On the otherhand, a home made "spud-gun" made of plastic tube is classified as a firearm. I have thought of applying for a permit for one. You need to demonstrate a "need" for a permit to acquire a firearm. I thought my "need" would be for a dog training dummy thrower.

Funny, a harmless spud gun is illegal but violent video games that desensitise people to violence and turn people on the fringe into killers is OK? :?

You can get a license relatively easy, if you make a so called hunters exam. The exam costs about $1500 to make. But I'm not a hunter, so I doubt I would get a license that way. What annoys me so much is that you cannot buy any kind of modern firearm here without a license, not even a .22 caliber rifle...

Aren't we forgetting about one of the few truly automatic pistols which was made by Mauser....?

Yes, but they made a serie of rifles together with a Swedish arms manufacturer.
