Using god's name in vain is a sin. Possibly insulting a person does bring them down. But use of a list of banned words themselves still looks unlikely to lead to sin or be in any way evil or mandated against in the bible.

I don't think that there is something in the bible against using words sh*t or c*nt to name defecation or vaginae.

It is also still hard to imagine a mechanism that for example, if I say "Homeopathy is BS" would make me start working during sabbath, marrying a gentile, eating shrimp or committing other sins.

I don't want this to become a VS topic. Just putting the facts out there. Mainly its your life, so its your choice whether you would use those words or not. As Jesus said "You fallow me" (John 21-22) meaning I should look at my own spiritual life and not be so concerned about others.

Actually, Martin Luther was very fond of profanity, because it got the point across to his peasant followers. I think almost every other word out of his mouth was "s**t."

Take away the right to say "f**k" and you take away the right to say "f**k the government." ~Lenny Bruce

My aside: that goes exponentially so for religion.

I just tend to find swearing as a form of expressing one's anger. I mean when it comes down to it, would you rather have someone say f**k or get very physically violent?

That some people can be sometimes violently upset by the use of a few words that usually are emotional with little results in actual action is a clear demonstration of idiocy. They are not worth all the bother.

Well, off the cuff, there are two definitions of "swearing."

One is to take an oath, which Christians are told not to do. They are to say "yes" or "no." There are not to swear to oaths.

I always had a brain boggle over this one... would this not imply that marriage was a sin?
Swearing fealty to your liege in the ancient crusades?
To your lord in medieval times?
To your country, like the US pledge of allegence?
To your queen or king?
... list goes on...

It was in either Thessalonians or Ephesians where Paul said that course language shouldn't be used. It's best not to swear since it provides a bad example, but it's understandable that in stressful situations the interjections and invectives heard and seen everywhere would be utilized. Even Mr. Roger's flipped the bird at a tent once.

Children who should be taught how to think, not what to say. Young children especially learn by example, and can learn how to approach subjects and argumentation even through example.

Consider the possible effects of a kid hearing their parents screaming random words about the consistency of bowel movements and the legitimacy of the marital status of the others' parents when they were conceived with perhaps a few words mentioned about selfish forms of sexual activity. And also consider the effect of hearing a calm rational debate instead.

More specifically: you're saying it is bad per se...but how is it bad? The words themselves are not bad other than to those who are preconditioned to react negatively to them. What makes them inherently bad?

Well, specifically in instances such as the example provided in my above reply to you. And now I write the part that you will truncate from the rest: it is bad in terms of the original meanings of the words in association to self-gratification at the expense of others and the other references and connotations attached to them, although not necessarily in terms of current usage. I think that most people today mostly just see "bad words" as expressions of anger and are usually quite detached from their meaning and instead serve as emotional indicators more than actual curses. However, such depends on personal usage as to whether the meaning is attached, but I doubt that concerns you so much as the freedom to say it. I think that people should be free to say whatever they want, and as long as they don't act out physically with violence against another they should not be punished for what they say.

So, swearing is bad because if you swear kids might learn to swear which would be bad because then they would swear and make other kids swear. Oh. I get it.

I don't think it's bad. I just don't do it much in public.

In the time of Queen Victoria, flush toilets were made by a man named Crapper.

Thus it became a polite euphemism to say "I am going to the crapper"

"Gay" became a polite euphemism for "homosexual" but now kids get into trouble for saying "that is so gay".

This is pathetic because when when the kids say "gay" they mean silly or stupid and it has nothing to do with sex.

I'm atheist, but cursing to me just sounds course and crude, and is a trait of someone who can't find more descriptive language.
