Seems to be a lot of evidence that suggests no one really knows the exact shape of the god-shaped hole at all...no one can agree on whether it looks like a triangle, rectangle, or a circle.

As a species, it's actually ESSENTIAL to survive and reproduce, nothing more.

Cute guess, though.

I wouldn't say that there is a deeply rooted compulsion for human beings to worship, as it were. But listening to your elders who sound authoritative and taking their opinions as a given is a fairly effective survival tactic for social animals like ourselves. The problem is that the opinion has changed from "don't eat this berry, it is poisonous" to "eat this bread, because it is representative of the body of a man who was the mortal son of an inconceivably complex entity who is watching you and reading your thoughts all the time and made the whole universe, and you're going to go to a horrible place forever when you die if you don't".

Always lovely to find a fellow fan of The God Delusion. :D

I wish. No, its from a comic site called desden codak, and the artist normally draws incredibly well. Obviously that little black and white number shows his comedic timing and intelligence.

and his blog is filled with adroit observations on art. (and awesome art!)

Fascinating: a discussion about the god-shaped hole: which might in other circumstances be termed the me-shaped hole: turns into a debate on whether mine's bigger than yours.

I have read in NON-CHRISTIAN literature, that humans have 3 major needs;

Spiritual/emotional, intellectual and physical

This makes a lot of sense to me.

I am an almost obsessive collector of knowledge and generally very committed to regular physical exercise.

My Spiritual/emotion needs are those that are least satisfied in me (due mostly to Autism)

The idea is that it is necessary to satisfy all three and than NONE of the three is more HOLY than the others.

- A lesson here for the pious and or religious fanatics; the academic wimps and the depraved 8O
