... it is really not that simple to colonize a "dead" planet as dropping people off and telling them to build houses and farm. And how exactly would you move billions of people off of the Earth? We can barely get things the size of a truck out there right now. When we have a space elevator, even, its an eye of the needle compared to the tide waiting to pass through it

1000 years is quite a stretch.

We could all probably live significantly longer if we cut out unnecessary deleterious behaviors but most people aren't willing to do that.

I agree in principle that there are things people can do that will increase their life span. However the modern Human lives longer than ever before and this is simultaneous with the increase in unhealthy behaviors. Which deleterious behaviors are you referring to?

Not only does a human need to live that long but you need to be able to sustain yourself for that long. Unless you become different socio class that is indeginized somewhere then I dont see the problem.

I think there will be a war before it happens. Many religious people would find it morally offensive. They find abortion offensive. Imagine what the will think of that.
It will take forever for it to actually be legal in a country with a Christian majority like America or the U.K.. It would be more likely legal in a country that is very liberal like Holland.
Remember this is considered immoral to all religous or spiritual people.

i will bet you my pc that not all religious people will find this offensive.

dome might but to be honest religion should stick to religion and keep out of politics and science.

Some people live longer. I remember seeing something on tv about several long lived people and a particular gene sequence that kept them in good health. I can't remember where I saw it though.

People don't generally die from age, they die from disease.

Keeping your stem cells healthy is key to a long life, but I don't know what to suggest aside from eating properly and curing whatever diseases you might have at the moment if at all possible.

Also avoid bullets and poison. Even if we do live to 1000, we won't be immortal.

Smart thing to do is to stop war and create. Countries need to start taking an altruistic approach to life, that is unless there idea of war is altruistic, so be it.

The Natives of the lands have much to teach in this regard.

My grandmother is 104. My grandfather died at 86. Her last sibling died when she was 92. She was 7th of 11. She stopped driving at 97 and went from her own apartment to the local home. My grandfather provided for her until she was 100. He thought that would be enough. He gave the rest to his sons and they mostly squandered it. She's broken both hips and survived maybe 7 battles with pneumonia. She lives on Social Security now. The living isn't quite as nice.

Her closest age mate that she knows is 94. Grandma was 13 when she babysat her; she sees her as sort of a pest. Most of the people she loved are gone and those she knew have changed with age and she doesn't really know anyone other than the few who visit her frequently. Grandma spends her days listening to the birds in the aviary she and Grandpa donated to the home over 25 years ago.

She says she doesn't know why she's still alive. She figures God must have a purpose for her. She simply endures and beats visitors at dominoes.

I think 100 years is plenty. I'm ready now but I figure I've got another 30 or 40 years to go. I figure if I have to live, I want to be in the best health possible. I'm a bit of a health freak.

My dad is 82 and has been in poor health for the past 10 years. He's suffered through a lot of pain and gross stuff. 10 years at death's door and he's probably going to hang on for another 10. It's frustrating to watch. I think it's silly to live like you're dying, but I've never been 80 so I don't know. Maybe I'll think differently then.

Probably, but read this. Something to consider.

Precisely. 100 years is too short of a lifespan. Even animals should live longer, and there are some which do such as the tortoises and iguanas of the Galapagos islands which can live to around 300 years. It's kinda ironic to me that while Darwin was in such an Edenic place that the only thing he could think of was Charles Lyell's book about uniformitarian geology, but whatever there. I wish that everyone could live antediluvian lifespans and colonize space, spreading out and bringing life to what would otherwise remain merely barren lands until the end of time. It would sort of be like Asimov's Spacers, and that would be cool.

First in our own solar system, and as technologies are developed and improved, every star that we can reach afterward.

With current technology that means no stars other than our sun. The nearest star to us is 4 ly and the best speed we have managed is of the order of 100,000 mph. Figure it out.

even then its possible with a lifespan of a 1000 years, or you could make generational ships.

(not that there is any actual indication we will only have the technology of today when we do so)

At 1000 years a generation a trip to Alph Centuri would be ten generations each living in a tin can. And if anything goes wrong they are goners.

And that solution would probably cost ten time s the GDP of the U.S. It is a very bad investment.
