I have a non-religious family, but live in a socially conservative little village where there are pretty much at least 1-2 Churches of different denominations every mile. I remember feeling odd when I was a Cub Scout/Boy Scout about how much more I heard about religions, faith, and the Christian God/Jesus, but I never really put much stock into it even when some of my peers attempted converting me to Christianity (the irony here that I eventually opened their minds to reason and are now Agnostic at least).

I'm fortunate that I never had some kind of intrusive "background check" to see if I was religious, because not subscribing to a faith is grounds for termination of Boy Scouts membershp, and I actually overall enjoyed my time within that organization to an extent.

WHAT?! You can't be a boy scout without having a religion? That sounds like discrimination and part of the Christian Fundamentalist agenda...

I was born into a family with a lot of religious members in it, though my parents were not religious. They wanted me to believe what I wanted so didn't tell me what religion to believe or not to believe and I don't really think they are atheists, they just don't have any religion. But it was my grandparents who got me into being a Christian and I was a Christian for a few years, struggling with sins and stuff like that.

When I got into High School, I was starting to get some kind of mental health issues and was having lots of violent and extremely sadistic thoughts. Staying a Christian with a mind like that and being too ashamed to ask anyone for help was rough, but one day, I realized that the "merciful" god of "love" I believed in had more issues than I had. What I mean with that is, whether it's a man-made deity or not, it was a million times more sadistic than I could have ever been, if I ever acted on my violent thoughts. I realized how truly narcissistic this "perfect" deity was and that is what caused me to lose my faith.

I did lots of research on the subject after that and it helped me to realize that the god I believed in was a false god and I gave up on my faith entirely and I can't and will not ever go back to it.

There is not an option for "Born into religious family - resisted continuous attempts to be indoctrinated and have always been an atheist"

That's the option I need. While I find religion fascinating, I have no interest in joining one and don't/can't believe in gods.

I have a good idea for this. This option described will be an option, after my post, even though it won't be in the poll. Just say, "I vote 'Born into religious family - resisted continuous attempts to be indoctrinated and have always been an atheist.'"

I was born into an evangelical Christian family, more specificlyin the Holiness Movement. But I became dissatisfied with their church's doctrine of Christian perfection, and wondering if I was good enough for God. After alternating between agnostic/implicit atheism, and Abrahamic monotheism, for the most part, I'm now a deist. I personally feel that it makes the most sense to me, with all due respect to those who might think differently. I've heard both the Bible's account of how God supposedly spoke the universe into existance, and a Biology textbook's account of how it was supposedly burped into existance, when a simple cell swallowed up a complex cell, and developed indigestion. I feel that both seem far fetched to me. So I choose to believe in theistic evolution, with the Deity as first cause of, and prime mover of matter.
