Really? Billionaires tried to influence the election by making the democracy their plaything, and voter suppression in the BS name of preventing voter fraud had threatened to disenfranchise millions of Americans of the "wrong" color and economic class. If anything, people power won, and that's the very core of freedom. Plus, civil rights has been extended by the embrace of gay marriage through the popular vote in my own state of Washington and in Maryland. That definitely was proof that freedom is hardly dead.

I'm going to apply for a "free" phone, see if I can get "free" health insurance," food stamps, and maybe housing stipends. Anyone who has studied history will know where the U.S.'s experiment with Socialism/Communism will end, but since this is what the nation as a whole wants, then I guess we should enjoy some of the temporary benefits.

Don't be ridiculous, Obama is far from being a socialist. Not all socialist are communist either. There won't be gulag or anything like that.

I am willing to bet that most people complaining about socialism don't even know we have a Socialist Senator, Senator Bernie Sanders.

Most people who b***h about socialism don't even know what it really is. It's just an insult they hurl at people whose liberal politics they don't like.

Socialism. Aparatchics control the economy and the most productive people are harnessed and saddled to carry the dead weight of the proles on their backs. Look at the former Soviet Union and the current North Korea. See the "benefits" of socialism.

The Chinese have the good sense to give up socialism and try neo-fascist croney capitalism.

I think it's more a matter that those systems failed to respect personal freedom in those countries that led to such an economic breakdown. That, and North Korea and the old Soviet Union had never been industrial power houses before the advent of socialism. I doubt any system would have brought about a healthy economy anytime soon.

yeah, that's about it, Bill  - compared to actual socialism, Obama lands way right of the middle.

Washington, Maine, and Maryland legalized same sex marriage through ballot referenda. Minnesota rejected an amendment banning same-sex marriage through the same mechanism. This means all the right-wingers that were saying "whenever it has come to a vote, the people have rejected it" can finally stuff it. We have reached a turning point and this civil rights issue is one they're just going to have to learn to live with, just like desegregation and women's suffrage. It's all forward from this point on.

Colorado and Washington also decriminalized marijuana.

And Obama won a close, but decisive victory. 300+ electoral votes.

Feeling pretty good about nearly every outcome.

Compared to other incumbents being reelected, Obama won, the least percentage of the vote.

There were other candidates. I think, if the Libertian party had not run, Obama would have been closer to defeat. Obama has probably won Florida. If Romney, had won Florida, Ohio, Colorado and Virginia, he would have won the election. There was an increase in the Latino vote and the Asian vote. The white vote (especially the white male vote) decreased.

If Romney was a little smarter, he would have won Ohio, Florida, Virginia and Colorado, winning the election.

Another reason for a close election, is the time taken to get an actual result in Florida (the 2nd most important state).

It was an unusual election.

Obama, is a mediocre President. Romney would have been a bad President.

Obama is a bad enough. Romney is worse.

Romney wanted war in Iran, get Big Bird on the unemployment line (one of the the things that killed his chances), make abortion illegal (I'm pro-choice and I can't even get pregnant), self-deportation (some people really need to leave their country of origin and in case you didn't know, this country was founded by British Immigrants) and flip flops on issues.

I do agree with Romney in cracking down on China though. And gotta give him credit for Massachusetts' schools being #1.

Now what's bad for Obama:

-Push for more gun control legislation. My stance on gun control is that it's like salt on our food: It is not good if there is either none (guns for everyone with money for it, even convicted felons or the mentally unfit) or too much (it only takes LEGAL guns off the street and leaves law abiding citizens vulnerable to illegally equipped criminals).

Also on immigration: I 100% agree with deporting illegal immigrants with serious rap sheets.

i have a hard time understanding the thinking process of some righties who, upon obama's victory at the polls, are thinking [aloud] seriously of moving to canada- isn't this like cutting off one's nose to spite one's face? how can they expect to be treated in canada the way they'd profess to like? after all, canada has gun control, universal health care, a relatively generous welfare state, relatively non-pious public mores [nudity/profanity common on public entertainments like tv/radio], long-established progressive taxation, relatively left-wing politics that make our democrats seem like their conservatives, et al.

Canada doesn't have one thing that America has - though these same righties are too balless to admit it - a black president.

ah so  so it comes down to race, eh? well, canada does have lots of pakistanis and ukrainians to compensate. there is some clumsy [politically iffy] humor hiding in that last sentence someplace.

Good stuff. I was worried for a moment there.

Theoretically, I should mostly care about the effect on US foreign policy... I have to assume that Romney would be more belligerent, but I don't even know whether there is a significant difference between the two. Obama seems to be very fond of saying things like "all options are on the table".
