It depends on what they are doing and what you do in response. If I were to slap you in the face, or pound you on the chest or arm with the side of my fists, then decking me is completely out of order and cowardly. You could very easily control me (if I wasn't actually me) by grabbing my wrists.

If I were to punch you, then you totally have the right to get back up and knock the crap out of me.

Women usually have lower upper body strength than men. In other words, I shouldn't be able to really hurt or threaten you if I hit you. It should be just a minor inconvenience to you. Women traditionally do not know how to hit, and to this day most women "hit like a girl". Hitting like a girl does not hurt. Not bad anyway. It hurts some, it smarts, but it's not enough for you (or me) to whip somebody's ass over. And if somebody hits like a girl you can usually overpower them and subdue them and make them listen to you when you talk logic to them. You are supposed to be the one with the "cool head".

Unfortunately, in my marriage, those roles are reversed. My husband hits like a girl. He does have upper body strength but he doesn't know how to use it. Every punch he throws is a wild ass roundhouse. He's never been taught to hit from the shoulder or to rotate his fist. I have.

The whole idea behind not hitting a woman back is because one person who knows how to fight should not hit a person who does not, even if the clueless person hits them first. I have violated that tenant. You can pretty much tell if the person who hits you knows what they are doing. There are lots of other variables as well. But you do not hit a person who is clueless unless you have other compelling reasons to do so.

If I were to ever hit you, you would be totally justified in hitting me back. If my daughters were to hit you, you would be totally justified in hitting them back too. However, if Jane Doe down the street slaps you in the face, or hits you with her purse, you are not justified in punching her. You should hit back only if need be, and only the amount of force they have used against you. I have knocked a grown man down then been knocked across the room myself. I've been knocked across the room and got up and knocked a guy across it. I've been slapped silly and pushed him against the wall and made him listen to me. I've been hit with so many things, including a VW bug, that it's not funny. You have to have an internal compass of honor. Who you hit and how hard is determined by that, and that alone.

Why are we gratuitously circle-jerking to the idea of hurting women in retribution, exactly?

Who the hell actually says there is no right to defend one's self (with situation-specific proportional deterrant response as OOM described above) in the first place?

Seriously. Is the perception that the majority of people assert such?

No.

It's just a pet peeve of mine. As I've already said, I'm somewhat physically larger than the average woman. This gives certain other women the idea that it's "okay" to hit me and I shouldn't hit them back.

I'm not salivating at the thought of hitting small women. I'm just speaking from a place of personal irritation; therefore, I sound more heated than I actually feel.

I dont hit women back even though they hit me some take advantage of it. It has been drilled into my brain growing up not to hit women I am supposed to suck it up and take it like a man even if it involves hitting me with hard objects or chasing at me with a kitchen knife!

That's okay.

If some chick hits you, just call me and **I'll** kick her arse.

Reasonable, intelligent, non-bitter men on WP are a resource to be cherished!
