He is talking to a police officer, who you can find through google. Which "conspiratorial claims"?

Like the policeman said it is hearsay, so that video is also hearsay at the moment. Only time will tell.

Also there is some question it seems as to if she was dealing with the police or the FBI becuase of the child porn.

If child porn is involved it was most likely the FBI.

Why the f**k are police talking to people who just phone them up to ask about cases that don't affect them? Surely there's some confidentiality issues there?

If these threats have been faked, then that's a bad thing. The point remains that all of these people have been the victims of real threats, and that's much worse. I'm not familiar with Jenn Frank, but Anita's "crime" is "being a bit annoying" and Zoe's is "cheating on her boyfriend". Neither of those things warrant the backlash they're getting. Put simply, this disproportionate focus on Anita and Zoe, rather than on the people who are actually doing something wrong, is perverse.

How do you think journalists get details on cases?
Unless there is considered a serious threat, a lot of details are public. Some details may be left out, but a lot are public. They may require some paperwork to be filled for a lot of the stuff, but most is public records. Even the most classified police cases are supposed to be opened to the public after 20 years (in many places.)

I was under the impression that standard policy was to issue an ambiguous statement whenever there was public interest in a case rather than answering all the questions of any randomer who calls up.

Oh for the love of God. Anita Sarkeesian has done absolutely nothing except make a video series after being funded by Kickstarter campaign. She's not trying to censor games, she's simply making a critique of some common tropes in games. With respect to her most recent videos, she's not even again the portrayal of sexual violence in games, only just as long as the topic gets the respect it deserves.

The thing is, she has chosen to take a stand/make public commentary, etc etc etc- basically do frequent confrontation. It's her thing. If you do this, you are subjecting yourself to criticism and scrutiny. That's just how it goes. [Note I say "criticism and scrutiny", not harrassment.]

As for Zoe Quinn, basically her ex-boyfriend posts a blog post about her cheating on him (with five different men, no less), and then she gets slut-shamed by cyber-mob of misogynists on the internet, as though her infidelity has absolutely anything to do with anyone else except her and her ex.

The blog post was made to out her as an emotionally abusive sociopath. As someone who posts in an ASD forum it seems strange to me you couldn't care less about her actions and paint it as just the revenge of an ex - when it was in fact the boyfriend who broke it up because he couldn't deal with the abuse anymore.

It may be that everything the ex posted was 100% true... but it may not. It's entirely possible he is/was the "sociopath". Or a little of column a and a little of column b. There's not a good way to tell. So subjecting her to harrassment, etc because her ex decided to do all this stuff- which, really, even if they did have a truly awful relationship and she did cheat on him [...five times? really?], posting nudes pictures of some one on the internet, and all of the other things going with it isn't justified. I am also way more convinced that Quinn has suffered harrassment, and of a greater threat, than Sarkeesian. I will admit to a certain amount of ignorance [I have not been following situation closely]. It's hard to tag her as a professional victim either, as neither her blog nor her raising site are proliferated with "give me sympathy in the form of money" type plees. She says a couple things on her blog about stuff going on- and pretty recently on her blog she flipped out, but I am pretty sure she didn't say "so give me money because obviously that will help this situation". She also makes no reference to her personal issues on pateron.

Also Depression Quest is pretty great. But that's really neither here nor there- when it comes right down to it, it's probably difficult to actually tag Quinn for being exactly what her ex says she is, and him 100% innocent. Even if that was the case, what she is claiming is probably happening to a large degree, it doesn't really look like she is trying to directly play it for more money [though when you have support it is going to happen], and no one deserves that crap. End of.

Professional victim stuff is a load of crap though and I agree that when you enter a field/demographic because you want to promote YOUR platform, and not because you are interested in the field [as seems to be the case with Sarkeesian], you are poking the bears. It also really cheapens your cause and it's not wonder people don't want to listen, and are at the ready to turn against you. if you don't actually care, why should they?

[Kind of like "Zzzzz.... Sorry you were talking about gamers..."

It's got a name! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victim_blaming

Quote:
Victim blaming occurs when the victim of a crime or any wrongful act is held entirely or partially responsible for the harm that befell them.

Jonathon McIntosh is a self hating weirdo who sockpuppets his girlfriend to push his ideology because in his world straight White men's opinions shouldn't be heard. I've literally seen this dude tweet that he thinks there is "too much emphasis on video games being fun". SJW's war on video games is no different than Jack Thompson's war on video games. Both are under the delusion that video games somehow cause bad behavior in real life, Thompson focusing on violence and SJW's on sexism/racism/whatever. McIntosh is a self admitted propagandist and proudly highlights being called that, his whole schtick is trying to inject his ideology into pop culture. Knowing that about him, now you should know why he thinks games "shouldn't be fun".

I remember thunderf00t as the ass hole who endangered Natalie Reed, a trans woman activist who posts under an assumed name for privacy and security, by hacking into FreeThoughtBlogs website, after he had his credentials taken away, and trying to reveal as much private information as possible.

I liked his videos against creationism, but God damn, he's a total f**ktard outside of that.

I will only comment on Anita Sarkeesian, as my wife is a big time gamer who got sick of getting harrassed while playing Call of Duty and quit playing FPS games online and a became huge fan.

Even if you don't like Sarkeesian, you can verify independently the most of the numbers she cites (which has been done by plenty of groups). I personally find her to be quite repetitive, but also find her points to be entirely valid. Have you played that many games where female characters are anything more than almost anime like little girls or women with ridiculously diproportionate breasts? And have you been to gaming conventions? I haven't for a few years, but last time I went there were an awful lot of booths manned by women wearing very little clothing, even for games being promoted that had no women in them at all.

I have very little doubt that threats were real. Threats like these are not exactly uncommon when it comes to vocal and visible activists of all stripes, with some particularly graphic threats to feminists in particular. And just go ahead and read the comment sections on any of these stories for a very upsetting view of what some people say about rape that they feel is perfectly acceptable free speech. The only public figures who seem to be calling these threats fake are the the same ones who lump all feminists into the violent feminist camp and/or deny that sexism exists in any form other than discrimination against men.

As for industry response, perhaps they are starting to wake up to the changing gamer demographics. While the specific FPS games are still dominated by male players, women now make up roughly half of the total video game market.

Alright well harassment/death threats and what not is never really a good thing that is for sure. However I have seen video game characters that are female and don't quite fit your description, also if it is an anime game it would make sense that the characters including females look like anime characters. I have never been bothered by the look of characters on video games...Also these women at gaming conventions wearing little clothing, is this forced? Or could it be that is the way they choose to dress? Not to say sexism never comes up amoung gamers or just people who play game sometimes even...but should we start passing laws to dictate how females in a video game have to look? If someone is unsatisfied with how female video game characters look, why don't they design their own game?

Either way harrassment and threats is no way to deal with someone pointing out things they don't like in video games or whatever this chick did...but still not sure I'd agree with the initial points that the harrassment came prior to. Also does it really matter what gender people who play video games are....its not a competition I mean if females have the goal of being half the video game market just so they can say they are, seems a little pointless if more females get into it cool, if not its not exactly sexism if there aren't as many female video gamers than males.

Just for the record, this is what the vast majority of feminists want (myself included).

Well then why is it called feminism? That term in itself certainly seems to cater to females specifically...maybe evolving it to a term that does not specify females. Now back in the day when women could not vote, really had no rights that term does make sense as it was needed for women to gain rights...now that we have gained our equal rights continuing the term feminism to describe a goal of bringing men and woman together as people seems a little unusual...there are probably better terms for that goal.
