Same in the US. It is at the point where few grants go to any researchers who is researching anything not guaranteed to succeed. I have seen dozens of lifetime researchers shutting down their labs here and sending their lab techs to the unemployment office, and it just makes me sad.

@khaoz, I have friends who've done something similar in order to get scholarships from Christian organizations. I realize they've got their own evangelical agenda, but when helping out others, seems odd to have this one condition of "follow my traditional values".

Which is why helping the needy should never be left only to private organizations and individuals. They will discriminate and help primarily only those who ascribe or conform to the desires of the benefactors. As in Christian organizations mandating that those receiving assistance from them must engage in prayer/services and sometimes employment or volunteer endeavors, just as an example

and for the devout poor people? gov mandates their kids go to school. but they can't afford private schools. so their kids are forced to learn something they are both against. hardly fair.

I am sure the government would be more than happy to give vouchers to those families who want to send their children to private charter schools to be righteously indoctrinated into conformity with a nice religious education

^This is the case for Ohio. Charter schools have very few limitations on what they can and can't teach. They only need a certain percentage passing standardized tests to maintain their charter. There has been some anger recently between different denominations about what is being taught at some of the schools.
