I trust the American electorate [including the passive non-voters] to do the right thing, no more than I would trust a stopped clock to tell the right time more than twice per day.

There's one other thing: being a New York City resident tends to turn off the national electorate at large, for some reason.

I was just watching one of his town halls a few minutes ago and I'm actually thinking that if he keeps rattling the cage and even gets Fox News out on a limb chasing after him to wreck him lots of dirty laundry about the whole establishment will start billowing out. Even though he'll likely never get nominated he's a damn good catalyst and agitator.
