I don't think that the problem with science is in the methodology nor the advances it often leads to. Rather, the problem is with agenda-driven funding. Examples of this can be found in many studies which set out to prove the existence of something, rather than to disprove the hypothesis. For extreme examples, I highly recommend you take the time to pour over some "creationist science" papers, if only for the entertainment value.

Oh for the good old days when men like Robert Hooke and Isaac Newton conducted natural philosophy like gentlemen.

Surely, in that age of chivalrous manners, when nobility still meant something, Science was the most serene and pure of human endeavours!
