The point is that if a republican chose a white VP who had ancestors who owned slaves would that be acceptable.

We all know,of coarse not in a post 8:46 George Floyd world.

I fully understand the issues of ancestry as far as African Americans having slave owners as ancestors, however Harris is not a descendent slaves.

And I have no issue with people who's ancestors owned slaves, whether there white or black on a personal level. But this would never be acceptable in national politics from a white VP candidate.

"we all know that it wouldnt be acceptable"?

I dont know that.

Can you point to an example of the media punishing a modern pol for the crimes of the pol's 150 years past ancestor?

The Media even allows Trump to "adopt" Andrew Jackson (a slave owner) jas his ancestor-in-spirit, and no one objects.

And also...she is Black from Jamaica. How do you think Black folks got to Jamaica? It's impossible for her to not ALSO be a descended from slaves, even she does have this unproven descent from a slave owner.

I don't know of a case where a white politician was accused of having slave owning ancestor's,but it's just the beginning of the post 8:46 George Floyd world where race relations have changed forever. However conservatives have been accused of racism by liberals for years,if such a case came up now of coarse they would be drawn and quartered by the media.

As far as Trump and Jackson,I know nothing of that, but that also could be pre may 25 8:46,and Trump does get accused a racism by the media all the time,he is one of the most mocked presidents in US history.

As far as your other point;I don't have a Harris family tree,so I could not speculate, all I have on her is the Forbes article.

As slave masters often took advantage sexually of their slaves, it can surmised that most African Americans to one degree or another are descendants of slaves and their white masters. I believe Frederick Douglass' father had also been his white owner. So as far as Harriss being the descendant of a slave owner is concerned: whoopie-friggin'-doo!

I don't think anyone really wants 8 more years of Biden...they just don't want 4 more years of Trump more.

I never wanted 4 years of Trump in the first place but in 2016 Clinton seemed worse.Biden if anything is even worse than Clinton.

To exact upon the descendants of slave-owners any retribution for their ancestors' activities would be an extreme miscarriage of justice.  To even insinuate that such a miscarriage should occur itself implies a vindictive attitude of Biblical proportions...

Quote:
The Lord is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation.
Let's all leave the multi-generational vindictiveness to G^D, shall we?

(The quote is from from Numbers 14:18, by the way.)

Retributions are no issue, the question is more; Is this a good example in a post 8:46 on may 25th world, where the ethics of race is to a higher standard.

Punishing Kamala Harris is not an issue here.

Thanks for the "Bemibar" quote though

It became publicly known that Mitch McConnell is descended from slave owners last year in July, two great great grandfathers to be exact. It looks like the media cared (reported on it) for all of a week about it and I've seen no great crucifixion campaign. I didn't even know about it until today because I had to google to even learn about it. Do I care that he is? Not really. Would the media care more if it was a Republican presidential or vp canidate? I doubt it. Would the Democratic campaign put out attack ads? Maybe but unlikely, pretty crude angle of attack that I don't think would win any voters. It would probably trend on social media though. Go back far enough in anyones family tree and there is sure to be bad people at some point.

Holding her to an unreasonable standard is the issue VS. It's still irrelevant who her grandparents were and you're still harping on about it as though it should matter. Clearly it's not an issue and you're not succeeding at making it one no matter how much Helen Lovejoy hand-wringing you engage in.

Oh won't somebody please think of the same people I knowingly and purposefully perpetuate negative stereotypes about on a daily basis.

Have his ancestors stopped owning slaves in the intervening months?

I suppose it was. We could see that making a difference in the coming months/years.

The fact remains though that we have neither an actual example of a Democratic politician getting off the hook or a Republican politician getting in deep doo-doo for being descended from slave owners since that fateful day. I'm all for personal accountability, but ancestry doesn't seem like a strong attack angle.

No, of course not!  His ancestors are still out there right now, sucking down those mint juleps and cracking their whips over the backs of their slaves!  Can't you see them?  They're right there in front of you!  Look!  There goes one now!  Slurping and cracking his way across the fields of cotton and indigo without a care in the world!

Amazingly relevant for someone who has been dead for over 100 years, eh?

 I hope you appreciate the sarcastic imagery.

I believe this was understood from the get-go and this thread is just an attempt at creating much ado about nothing.

And maybe grind an axe-head or two along the way...
