She was a strong woman---but she played the 1950's women's role to the hilt within her show (not necessarily in real life).

In Victorian days, women didn't have many rights. Nevertheless, they were often depended upon to manage households. Without women, everything would have been a mess in many Victorian households. Men knew this---but frequently treated women like crap, nevertheless.
