Being gay is definitely extremely difficult in a communist country. Communist ideology is quite homophobic - it sees homosexuality as "bourgeois". Almost all communist regimes criminalized homosexuality at some point in their history. It's definitely better for gays in communist countries to leave than it is to remain in their countries.

Things have definitely gotten much better in Cuba recently: See Wikipedia.

Seeing homosexuality as "bourgeois" is not intrinsic to communist ideology. But communists do tend to use the word "bourgeois" as a catch-all insult, in much the same way that both "communist" and "Nazi" have all-too-often used as catch-all political insults here in the U.S.A.

So did almost all capitalist regimes.

Authoritarian regimes, including communist ones, do take longer to get over this sort of thing than more open societies do.
