The problem is when people lack critical thinking skills, the media teaches them to think "oh this happened 30 years ago in this nation, and it's happening now in this nation, but it could NEEEEEVVVVEEER happen to me". Most people believe whatever the television tells them to believe, they might **say** otherwise, but really their television is like their preacher.
People in this mind state are not very open minded at all.... Open minded means even acknowledging the ugly truths, not hiding from them. Not lying to yourself, not following the crowd. If no amount of evidence can change someone's mind about something, that means they are just plain ignorant.
Sad thing is, those types are the common people, throughout the centuries the intellectuals of their respective times have made the common person the object of folly for their stupidity. The commoner is impulsive, they don't think logically, they think with blind emotions (some of which are very bad, and that is where the problems come in). The commoner is very tribalistic.
The commoner's stupidity, coupled with their over-powering majority status, is the REASON tyrants are able to get into power, and various dictators, including Hitler, have made referrence to this fact. It all boils down to, "don't underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers".
