A different translation does not mean a different Bible. Personally, KJV is fun for me sometimes. That, and NIV. NLT seems to be becoming popular, and I don't like that one. But you could use whatever translation you like, it's still the same Bible. If their are no added or subtracted books, it's the same.

Not necessarily. Different translations can lead to different interpretations of what has been said. To get the most accurate words, one would have to go back to the original Hebrew and Greek and study from there.

Sarcastic_Name, I think what Paula was trying to say was not that the JWs have a different translation of the Bible, but rather that they have a different Bible altogether. Many parts are similar, and even the same, but things have been changed.

For example, in John 1:1
in the NIV, it reads that "the Word was God", with an implied the right before the word God, but in the JW Bible, it reads that "the Word was a God". See the difference that one letter makes?

If anyone else has other examples of major differences, I would like to know about them. Studying comparitive religions is one of my favourite areas of study. :)

stlf, even if you are the only Buddhist here, you're still always welcome. It's cool that we can have so much diversity within the WP community.

I am not very religious but I was brought up in a Christian family. I believe the bible is a good book and try to live by what it says but I find some things it says a bit too far fetched.

I was raised Pentecostal (someone else explained this) but now I really believe what I believe. I totally believe in God but I will not go to a church. The holier than thou syndrome is too much for me plus, I want to believe in something that touches my life not the life of people that think they are better than me. I keep thinking that if there was a bar-b-q church (redneck style) I might be able to cope with that. :D

Theologically, I'm an agnostic.
Philosophically, I'm a Satanist (see >here< for more information.)

A decent Aspie, I'd say. People can sometimes be a bit of a drag, especialy when ranting about beliefs.

I still do not understand how anyone with AS can be religious?

Granted that people may have been told to believe in something when growing up, and perhaps that has become indelibly imprinted? But surely people understand that religion is an emotional response to the complexity and uncertainty of the universe in which we live, rather than an actual understanding of what the reality is?

I'm not trying to troll, but I really don't understand how anyone can hold religious belief. FYI, I have strong sympathy for the positive aspects of religious (and I particularly admire Buddhist philosophies), but I can not comprehend why people actually regard the spiritual and belief aspects of religion as real and as important and tangible as those things we can actually see and measure and test in the world.
