Why do people hate America?

I'm Canadian, and while I know a number of Americans and they're all great people. But I don't like America and never have. I'm also a history nut and to be fair the US is only the latest example of an empire telling the rest of us like we're 8, "do as I say, not as I do."

I'm not a fan of shallow people. When I see a debate on CNN about Obama's refusal to wear a FLAG PIN or the latest celebrity NEWS I want to hurl my tv out the fracking window. Of course I don't since I'm not made of televisions. I don't like arrogance either and many yanks have it in droves.

The defender of freedom and the little guy has a terrible record of stomping on both. To be fair a lot has to do with bush policies in the last 8 years. But it is a democracy and the rest of the world really won't accept: "But we're at war and he's president." or "But we were really, really scared at the time." There are a lot of places much more dangerous. The fact that they had any serious debate on the use of torture is mortifying. One of the few times I have had respect for Mccaine was when he said its indefensable and unreliable.

The deal that has just been approved by the US congress providing nuclear fuel to India scares me. What the frack do you mean they don't have to sign the non proliferation treaty?? The current Indian government seems very extremist to me and the last thing extremists should have is access to more nuclear material.

America's uncompromising support for Israel is also very unpalatable. Israel has become the brutal occupier and we all know where that military tech comes from. Though on a side note the Canadian gov has also been very appologetic for Israel's "excesses" and its never seemed right.

Before I get too ranty, I'll lay one last gripe. The "war against" language. You can't fight a fracking idea! From what I have read and what little I have seen the: "war on poverty," "war on drugs," "war on terrorism" have all been failures and many have arguabley strengthened the very thing they try to fight. What does it say about your country when the only way to talk about problems is to use the same belligerent language of twelve year olds.

One final thought. A symbol without any real meaning behind it is useless and a wasted gesture.

I dont think people hate America, rather, some people may hate some things about America. Similar to how some people may define others as a "bad influence". The person is not a bad influence, though their actions may be considered by some to be bad. This argument is countered by exerting a positive influence. The influence flows either way. Being aware of this idea can perhaps save many of us who seem to have been ignored, forgotten, neglected, disdained, demonized, etc. It seems I may be drifting off topic, though that is my opinion.

I'm both surprised and not that I haven't seen jealousy and schadenfreude mentioned yet, as I'm quite certain that both of them have a lot to do with foreign dislike of America. Not only are we a wealthy and successful nation, our rise eclipsed Europe, which had formally occupied our position for hundreds of years, and that must have caused resentment. Our poor are often better off than the rich of many countries, our culture dominates wherever it goes, of course people are going to resent us. Witness the malicious joy some posters here seem to be taking in our recent economic troubles, what other explanation but pent up resentment can there be? I'm not saying that many of the complaints voiced here are invalid, but I don't think that everyone here is being completely honest when they fail to mention plain old jealousy in their reasons for hating America.

Dox47, I can't begin to tell you what is wrong with your statement. American poor are in no way better off than the wealthy of other nations, Europe is not a single nation, and what cause to be jealous of America? Where do you get that from? American TV? Yeah, that'd be an unbaised source...

Other countries are just jealous of our superior dioxin technology

The real reason is George W. Bush and elected officials like George W. Bush, many Americans don't like the way things are, its not just foreigners. Thank god the world will get some relief soon because George W. Bush the biggest screw up in the world won't be president of the untied states of america anymore.

Honestly, I didn't care either. What bothered me is that they would condemn us for being "over-sexed", and then engage in the act, and obsess about it, at least as much as any American.

Sex is healthy and normal. It just seemed hypocritical to me when I was there that's all.

Maybe - it depends on where you are talking about. I lived in Scandinavia. The US used to be the number one place that people wanted to migrate to if they were going to migrate. No more. Canada and other Scandinavian countries are now the preferred destination.

Why? Many reasons. Crime. An expensive, convoluted health system that doesn't like to insure foreigners, since their medical records are in some foreign language that no one can read for the purpose of excluding pre-existing conditions. An obnoxious, anti-European sentiment that many Americans developed when Europe was reluctant to invade Iraq. The list goes on, but another situation worth mentioning:

Too many Scandinavians hassled and harassed for trivial reasons after 9/11 - one woman had overstayed a visa to the US by a few days when visiting a relative in the US in the early 1990s. Twelve or 15 years later she plans a vacation to the US, and is arrested, searched, held in detention under unpleasant conditions, interrogated, and then deported. Technically, the US was entirely within its rights to do that - but it was heavy handed and alienated millions of potential tourists and immigrants.

don't tell me that Bush started or is to blame for teh overall world opinion on America. Trace some centuries back where you will find a few more presidents acting as if they owned the world

We've only been around for a little over 200 years. I suppose you could find them, or interpret the behavior of individual presidents that way. We've been A**holes since our conception on your timeline though. Perhaps looking through a rather jaded microscope(?)

Centuries is still equal to 2 centuries and a half. Look at your policy of invading South and Central American countries. America needs tungsten, silver, gas, copper and now recently bio fuel from those exploited countries (your own back yard) for you to keep and maintain your comforable lives.

In Brazil they even raise cattle to provide with beef for MCDonalds, bio theft and patenting of millenary sacred plants from indigenous peoples to be sold at lucrative prices by your pharmaceutical giants.

You even got sweat shops in NY with third world employees. Did you know how many illegal immigrants died in the twin towers? An estimate of 3000. Their relatives, illegal too, never dared to ask for their bodies of fear of getting deported...

Without the slaves ti would never have become that big a power, you were all immigrants and now you bar Mexicans with "a Berlin" wall between you and the Mexico.

One could ask, who gives you the right to stop immigration when you have killed off 80% of the native population to build your god's on country and make the American dream come true. Not ot mention that California was part of Mexico and before that of teh Aztec empire...you gobbled it all up and did nuclear experiments in the Pacific not caring that it would affect the indigenous peoples who lived on those islands.

You pointed at Saddam Hussein and at Apartheid and yet you hold a Native American Indian leader in jail since 1974's uprising in Wounded Knee. The list is loooooooooooooooooooooooong of atrocities committed in your country and outside of it, you live in a police state and you think you got a choice to choose a leader (democrats and Reps are just the same and the choice between 2 parties is rather limited and flawed).

All you people should consider New Jersey. We're just about the most progressive state in the union... the death penalty is on permanent moratorium (heading towards outlawed), far stricter gun controls than in other states, and something approaching a universal health care system. Yeah, it's not as progressive as some European countries, but it's at least worth overlooking when you conduct your scathing reviews of the US.

You won't find people f*****g in public though... it's hard enough on me that other guys are bragging about the sex they've had while I'm sitting here never having had a girlfriend, let alone sex... the last thing I need is seeing other people doing it in public and that would just completely ruin what self-confidence I still have left...
