Yes, I know how it is ol' chap.

Anyway, I'm currently trying to stay clear of the ruling elite; but, you know, it's soooo tempting  .

antieuclid thanks for giving us insight from a converted Muslim. I have a few questions myself, if you dont mind. First off, I heard that the Quran states a muslim can only marry another muslim. I heard that women in muslim society are not allowed to marry outside of their religion because it would mean that they would give up their faith for their husbands. Conversely, a male muslim can marry a female outsider because she should convert to his religion.

Is this correct? How far would you take your faith? Would you be willing to marry a non-muslim?

my aspie friends,

I am a muslim from Saudi Arabia. I have been a muslim all my life.

Judaism was the first great religion, and then came Christianity and it became the second great religion. After that came Islam.

Muslims believe in all the past prophets (including Abraham, Moses, and Jesus)
We don't believe that god has a son, and that is the biggest difference between Islam and Christianity. We believe that Mohammad is the last prophet from God.

If anybody reads about the story of Islam and Mohammad they would know what the big deal is about.

People there are a lot of problems that are surrounding Muslims today, and it is set to corrupt the name Islam. Do you know what Islam means? It means to surrender to god. And the word Islam comes from the word Salam that means peace. Some extremist groups that want to change that meaning from peace to terror.

I always try my best to learn about something before judging it. Don't believe what people tell you, please just read about Islam's history and tell me what you think.

I live in the United States and I always get weird faces when I tell people I'm a Saudi Muslim, and after they meet me they have a better idea of what Islam truly is and we become good friends.

I try not to look at the differences of our religions, but the similarities.

Thank you, and may peace be upon you.

Assalamu alaikum i am a Muslim with suspected AS, after believing it was ADHD for over 10 years, I have recently been referred by my GP for more investigations.

Comkeen, I noticed you were asking about the rules of marriage. Yes, a Muslim woman must marry a Muslim man. As a Muslim, you must pray 5 times a day, fast during Ramadan, do Hajj etc. A man may have more influence over his family and their opinions, hence the rule. Please don't think this is sexist, as this is a religion for all times though this point may seem less relevant now. From a safety standpoint, a woman must do the pilgrimage without a male relative, and if she is the only Muslim in the family, then she won't be able to fulfil one of the major obligations.

A Muslim man is permitted to marry a Christian or Jew as they are followers of montheism, remember this rule is for all time and may have been more relevant in the past when Islam was in its infancy.

Seems sexist to me; though most religions and cultures have been at some point. I've read that many Muslim men still go along with treating women as inferiors. I'd appreciate if you'd explain why that is not sexist. Does the man get to say who his wife votes for come election time?

What do your beliefs say should happens to Muslims who convert to Christianity?

Woman can have leading roles in Islam, if we help promote rights.

I have heard a reference in the crusades to Christians and Jews being "People of the book,"
what does that mean?

BTW Great post midge, now I don't have to give an essay on the Crusades

the People of the Book is a term in Islam for peoples who, according to the Qur'an, have received divine scriptures — generally interpreted to refer to the Taurat (the Torah) and Injeel (the New Testament).

In Islam, the term applies to monotheistic Abrahamic faiths older than Islam who received revelation(s) (hence "book") from God. To orthodox Muslims this includes at least all Christians, Jews (including Karaites and Samaritans), and "Sabians" (identified with Mandaeans). Many early scholars such as Malik Ibn Anas agree in also including Zoroastrians, while some have argued for extending the concept further.

There are many statements in the Qur'an that promote tolerance towards People of The Book. For example:

And do not dispute with the followers of the Book except by what is best, except those of them who act unjustly, and say: We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you, and our God and your God is One, and to Him do we submit.(Qur'an 29:46)

I think the perversion of any religion, by its followers, or by those that want to see its demise is criminal. Some Christians want to see the Islamic faith gone from the face of the planet, just as some muslims want the same of Christians. The sad thing about it, is that if we look beyond our differences we CAN live in peace. Ignorance breeds contempt in the relm of religion, I think. I am a christian, but I dont HATE Jews, Muslims, Buddists, Pagans, etc. I personally see us all as people of the same God. Some other Christians tell me Im going to hell for believing that. But If God is the forgiving and loving and wonderful God they teach us that he is in the Christian Faith, then I can not see how only one religion can be "the only ticket" to heaven. I do not like the way many religions, Christianity included, treat women. People for get that some of the rules that were made thousands of years ago were made in a time very very different than our own. Some of those rules really dont apply now, again in my opinion. Its Just a pitty that we all cant see, accept and love the differences rather than fight about them.

"Why would anybody become a Muslim?" That's what I was wondering when I first saw this thread, but I thought that maybe I'd said enough about Islam on WrongPlanet.

I remember right after 9/11 some mainstream British newspapers printed big supplements about the glory of Islam.
And after the London bombings, politicians were falling over themselves to visit mosques and to be photographed shaking the hands of Muslim community leaders.
And scores of liberals seemed more concerned about a hypothetical anti-Muslim backlash (which never came) than about the atrocity that had actually taken place.

Maybe the people who actually voluntarily convert to Islam are an extension of the same phenomenon.

why do you guys even try to talk about a religion that you don't really know about?
Is what you hear in TV affected your minds that much?.. go and read about islam in any good web site.. read about what we believe.

man you would hate it if i talked about your religions without knowing enough info about them.

I only jumped in because someone was talking about the Irish and catholics and felt the need to put her straight. I agree, something needs to be done about the rampant muslim-hating on this site.
