I just discovered how many facebook groups there are that support these guys. I'm just puzzled. do you guys think this is another leftist craze?

I admit that I kind of support the Niger Delta militants - maybe not support per se, but I see they have some good points. they have a cause.

but Somali pirates?? those guys are not oppressed by any cruel dictator, they can do whatever the heck they want, but they choose to kill and steal. why do Western kids find that so appealing?

It is not about leftism or rightism. If I was Somali, I would root for pirates.

Why?

Somalia does not have state.

Therefore, coasts are lawless. European naval vessels and fishing ships have cleansed coast, turning desperate fishermen into bandits.

Only way to defeat piracy is either to make genocide upon Somalis, or establish working state there.

The main objection to the pirates, of course, is that they are doing things various governments regularly do without a government to stand behind them. The Israelis openly attacked and severely damaged the USS Liberty (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Liberty_incident) and killed 34 crewmen with no reprisal whatsoever.

That do not matter.

If Somalia had government which supported piracy, USA would squash it. In fact, USA squashed Islamic Court Union, which was functioning government which punished piracy.

Difference is that Israel is imperialist lackey of USA in Middle East.

Apparently the USA is not particularly adept at squashing. It has its problems with very primitive devices in Iraq and ran out of Somalia with its tail between its legs when the locals bashed it a bit.

I am not talking about 1993 war, but 2006 war.

Read.

In 2006, most of central Somalia united under Islamic Court Union. That scared USA, so they ordered Ethiopia (American puppet-state) to invade Somalia. Since Ethiopia has stone age army with antiquated Soviet T55:s, Americans were forced to give aerial support.

Ethiopia and USA managed to oust ICU.

But predictable result occurred. New hardline islamist movement - Al-Shahab - appeared in south, and has started to squash Ethiopians.

You apparently do not know much of Somalian history. Educate yourself.

ICU is still existing. They are active around Mogadishu. I do not know if they are allied with al-Shahab (extreme hardline fundamentalists).

i wonder why that was considered a success. as far as i know, ethiopia (with US aid) did indeed crush the ICU in somalia, declared victory, and went home

this means that the war was targeted specifically at ICU, but not at other hardline islamist groups following after them?

Ethiopia do not have resources to conquer and occupy Somalia permanently. Ethiopia must always mind Somali nationalists in Ogaden and neighbour Eritrea which is Anti-American totalitarian dictatorship.

USA do not have political capital to wage anything else than covert war in Somalia.

I also voted other, for reasons that seem to have been expressed by others. I abhor the action, but understand extenuating circumstances. I sympathize with most people in sucky situations.

Mindless Self Indulgence says it best: You'll rebel to anything - as long as it seems cool, edgy, and they can laugh at the kids who are still clinging to yesterday's cool & edgy thing.
