It's really quite frustrating to me how much our culture seems to loathe poop.

Why? It smells nasty, looks ugly, and its full of pathogens. I dont care how natural it is, its by far the most disgusting substance in the Universe.

I'd be interested in seeing the idea that human feces being loathed is a "cultural" thing. Given the sanitary issues, the idea that the revulsion is natural seems quite plausible.

Have you ever noticed how certain smells are revolting to nearly 99% of people regardless of what culture they come from. Im really surprised you would even consider it to be a cultural thing. Not to sound patronizing but is it common for those with a background in philosophy to think that most of human preferences are due to societal conditioning? You know, the whole tabula rasa concept? :?

On the contrary, I do not genuinely think that it is likely to be cultural; "I'd be interested in seeing..." is my polite way of saying, "whoever is making some claim should get some damn evidence". As your post did not address that apparent shortcoming in the quote you quoted, it seemed as well that I should bring up that weakness.

@Haliphron -

There is a layer of stuff coating much of the land-surface of the planet. Some people call it soil; others call it dirt. Two very different psychological reactions to the same thing.

Obviously it comes from the difference between being dirty and being soiled.

the origin of feces is seeds and eggs.

with no seeds to grow the plants that are eaten, and no eggs to produce any animal products, then there would be notthing to eat and no feces.

a clean dead world.

my friends wants me to go.

Well dirt doesnt STINK the way feces does, and many of the microbes in dirt are not pathogenic to humans.

And many of the microbes in shi t are not pathogenic while soil has lots of pathogenic stuff that does not warn you away with an odor.

You obviously haven't seen the SNL 'ad' for edible diapers - they can solve our waste problem and help ensure global food sufficiency!!

One of the reasons that 'ad' was so funny is that people get squeamish about bodily functions.

I guess it is impossible for everyone to be Goldilocks and get it just right .... there will always be people who are too negative (or not negative enough) about certain things: consider also this site: http://www.sneezefetishforum.org/forums/
