So marriage is more about sex than love, or equally so? I would like to think that love would be the primary reason to get married with no obligation or duty to have children. Marriages should have the ability to define themselves, not adhere to the strict rules and ridiculous control of the Church. Again, why do they persist in dabbling in people's private lives.

I don't want kids, should I not get married?

There are always grey areas, Sopho. Rarely are things black and white. Few "infertile" couples are completely infertile; I'm sure many still try to conceive. Your argument holds more water with old couples though; you're in that grey area. With two people of the same sex you step out of that grey area, IMO, into something that requires a different label. Just because you want something, Sopho, doesn't mean you should get it. You can't just reinvent reality to suit your own ends, though I see the Canadian government's giving it their best shot!

It's not a case of me wanting something therefore I should have it. It's about equality. Two people of the same sex CAN have children together, they can adopt, or one could be bisexual and have a child from a previous relationships. Accept it; there are NO decent reasons to prevent me from having the same rights as anyone else here.

man, leave the lecturing tone at home. From my point of view you've just hijacked this thread to play around on technicalities. Go champion a cause you care about.

Why? Marriage is fairly easy to define; or was until the left got their grubby little paws on it. Most dictionaries sum it up quite well in a few words; but I bet the Canadian ones make for a good laugh!

As for griping about the church, isn't marriage a religous thing that's been hijacked by the state and various left-wing crackpots with an axe to grind? If you don't want the church or state or anyone else telling you what to do, then why do you want to get married at all? Just so you feel you can have whatever you want and thus won't be a victim of that big bad bogeyman the left have invented to manipulate people: discrimination.

marriage exists in some form in most groups of people on earth. Even those places without little churches. Looks like religion did the hijacking in the first place. Ask me if I'm shocked.

My opinion:

This is one of those "slippery slope" issues. If we were to allow other forms of marriage than the standard man-woman type, where would it stop? Ok, we can have same-sex marriage, so can we have polygamy? What about marriage of kids under the age of consent? What about an adult marrying a minor? And for all you furries out there, why not marry an animal?

You see, we're not in some British inner-city school where discussion doesn't go beyond disgorging verbatim the contents of the latest edition of Tony Blair's little red book.

Well, there's some truth in that, but within a european and N american context I'd say that in the last 500 years its primarily been a religous thing. Of course if you go back further then the state and religion kind of blend into one anyway, but that's not really relevant to this

Because we are individuals and marriages should reflect this.

Marriage goes beyond the Church in modern society. There are marriage bonuses, assistance, recognition, allowances etc. etc. The government has all that book-keeping to do.

Plus, marriage is more the assertion of love these days. Marriage is a promise of commitment and trust; it's a symbol. That's why people get married.

I've not said it doesn't. But, the church do have a vested interest, still.
