This whole case makes me sick.
The media despite making a ton of inaccurate reports throughout, picked up on the brother Ryan saying Adam had Aspergers.
IMO, i don't think Adam had Aspergers. Maybe he was somewhere on the spectrum, yet i don't believe he would fit the Aspergers category.
It's also possible he had Antisocial Personality Disorder and just didn't like humans at all.
The dynamics between Adam and his mother were off the psychiatric charts. Adam had "staring spells" during school, those of which only his mother could cure. Nancy would come to the school daily or even twice a day to bring Adam out of his staring spell.
For anyone who has staring spells or zones out, unless you are severly Autistic, all it takes is some prompting my a teacher or someone else to get you back to earth. I believe that Adam faked these in order to get attention from his mother.
Adam obviously knew his mother would do anything for him and he took advantage of this. Maybe he got off on the power he had over his mother, in a sick way.
Adam was sick one night and didn't want his mother in his bedroom. So Nancy slept on the floor outside his room so that he could call to her during the night.
What type of person makes their own mother sleep on the floor? They had enough rooms in that house to pick a room where both could sleep comfortably in a bed and or couch. So this makes me think that's the psychopath in Adam doing that.
Making his mother a puppet for his needs, as he knew she would. His IQ was off the charts, so he wasn't a dummy.
Another problem is that the mother obviously wasn't all there. Maybe it was various stressers that wore her down; yet she was unraveling to the point where she missed the warning signs Adam would shown. Nancy seemed to get paranoid after the divorce and got worse. She trained the boys in shooting and bought more weapons in anticipation of doomsday. She was a Doomsday Prepper.
Now there is nothing wrong with being a Prepper. Preppers are self sufficient and very handy. However Nancy took it to an extreme and became paranoid.
The father, Peter, should have stepped in (aside from hurling cash at the mother) and actually took responsibility for his son. It's clear that Adam lived in Ryan's shadow. However it should have been apparent to Peter that Nancy was in no mental condition to be making decisions for their son.
Ryan, the brother obviously didn't miss the warning signs, as Ryan was the first one to state it was his brother Adam before he had even known it was his brother via media, etc. Who would suspect their own brother of such a thing unless you knew your brother capable?
The various schools Adam went to actually tried to intervene, and everytime Nancy fought them. She would claim only she could help Adam (a delusional outlook) and she would pull him out of the school, to put him in another, and finally home school him.
It takes a whole village sometimes to raise a child. There became a point where Nancy was too sick herself, and Peter seemed to ignore his son Adam, aside from financial help.
At what point can outside sources (CPS,Adult protective services, etc) actually step in?
We see Nancy trying, despite her irrational opinions on curing Adam, and her end of the world paranoia. We see Ryan, the brother who knew right away that his own brother had committed such atrocities. How did Ryan know? I'm guessing Adam showed prior signs or said something. Usually these mass shooters "hint" a lot about their plans.
Nancy had a friend who actually suggested an Autism support group (friends son was Autistic) yet Nancy never even went.
We can only guess that Ryan still talked to Nancy (just not Adam) and i'm sure he updated Peter on Nancy's condition. Why didn't they take action and have an intervention?
This case needed an intervention more than any other i can think of!
The whole family seems to be living in a state of denial.
When faced with a case as such, when can the state come in?
The results otherwise are devastating.
