What if I believe in God, but think Joe Pesci is the entity that answers our prayers?

I agree. I can even say in (some) schools... we pray for Him... and we know He is some bigshot sitting in his office. :(

But He can also come in some form which we revere...

Do we revere Paul or merely Paul Revere? Now if God had an ass like Marilyn Monroe I might have some worthwhile thoughts.

I think we revere Paul and Paul Revere in some schools...

Though I see some status showing the nice asses of some nice beauty...

Just think about what Christ's mother must have looked like. If she was good enough for God - who could argue with that?

No wonder some schools want to name themselves after Christ's mother.

Hadn't thought of it that way... Mary musta been one fine woman.

Still though... I think I'd prefer Aphrodite or probably Isis. Women much more appreciative of sex than any christian diety or religious figure.

I am an aspie and an atheist. I've never believed in god. When I was little, I was told biblical stories, but they were never very strongly differentiated from the other fairy tales, or actually, from the stories that were made up on the spot. As I have became older, I was shocked to believe that some people really really believe in the guy. It was like if I found out my parents actually believed in the tooth fairy (despite them being the ones to put the money under my pillow).
It seems to me that all that theists run off of is blind faith for their beliefs. I approach life very logically and make decisions based on available information and to be honest, a god hasn't been necessary to explain the universe since 1859. Life was the last big mystery, evolution explained it, and in a much more intellectually satisfying way.

To all of the theists, I would suggest reading some atheist literature, perhaps The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins. It neatly sets out a fair number of the most common arguements for god, shows how they are flawed and even gives a good explanation of why believing in god is ultimately a bad idea. Other suggested reading would be The End of Faith, which sets out a case for the dangerousness of faith and the idea that it may be necessary to abandon religion if we would like to avoid serious risks to the continued existance of civilization.

another Atheist...I think I realized I was being fooled on the same day I found out "Sinterklaas" (the Dutch version of Santa Claus) wasn't real. I have had serious problems with my heavily calvinist protestant family and frankly I can't stand most of them. That is such a joyless faith:(
Religion has certain advantages like belonging to a group, and the support that comes with it, and the idea that an old guy with a beard sits on a cloud and looks after you. Atheism means you have no-one but yourself to blame for whatever you do in life. But I couldn't convince myself to believe something that to me was an obvious lie, and as things turned out I am quite happy with it.

And I think death will be like switching off a computer. There will be nothing; and I find the idea comforting...

Just curious, why some Aspies believe in God and some don't? What accounts for the difference? Family factors?
