This is a very interesting thread...I usually dont read the entire thread, but this one is too good not to. I think I was hooked at the idea that government is a religion of sorts. Well I have to agree that it takes quite a bit of faith to believe in the government. While I also see that anarchy is really a total mess and some meglomanic group ends up taking over anyway. I dont know what the right answers are for the perfect model government...it seems that power attracts the worst kind of people. If I could vote for anyone...it would be Gandi, and he is dead, so there goes my hope of a decient leader.

Anyway, back to the subject at hand, There needs to be certain protections put in place so that gay people can have the same legal rights as hetro people. The most important is that if one partner dies...(the bio parent of the child) then the child is still legally the other partner's child. As it is now, the state can come in and take that child away if they dont jump through hoops to ensure that the other partner is the legal guadian (not parrent) and still then, that can fail and the state takes the child. There are other things like hospital visits...in a severe case some hospitals will only admit family...that does not mean a gay life-long partner either. There are other legal rights that are denied (not just tax breaks either) to non-married couples. Marriage is an institution to protect children and property...even in the pre-state definition.

So while I know that the church has major issues with change...hence the religious battles with the fundamentals of science, there are lives that are really impacted by this debate. And it is not a moral debate, it is a civil rights issue.
