Okay, here's what I heard. Supposedly, the story of Jesus has been told many times before time during which the Biblical story takes place. It has staple elements from the Biblical text: Born to a virgin, challenged authority, twelve disciples, tried and crucified, rose from the dead.
Here's what I believe may have really happened. There really was a Jesus of Nazareth, born in Galilee to Mary and Joseph. He was a religious reformer, actually sermonized, and sadly, was horribly crucified. I heard there's Roman records that verify this. He founded Christianity. When it was recorded much later, other fantastical elements were added from the legends.
This Holy Text business is touchy, and it's hard to say what's true, exaggerated, and made up.
I think there probably was a spiritual teacher around (who may or may not have been called jesus) but he didnt 'found' an organised religion. He was teaching people to connect to the creative spirit directly and become spiritually concious beings, so the thought of people falling into line and following dogma would have been complete anathema to him; therefore its likely he would have actively avoided creating a label/'brand' for his teachings at all.
this is not my voice btw -
