Laveyan satanists are a funny bunch. Anton himself was more like a theater school reject than anyone to be taken seriously other than maybe a couple things he happened to get right just out of pure angst.
If anyone's gonna be the antichrist, it's gonna be someone universally loved like Michael Jackson.
I wonder if maybe it was a messed up translate and they actually meant antechrist. John the Baptist was the antechrist.
I admit that I sometimes wonder what these Laveyians (at least when comes to the late Anton Lavey himself, Barton and a few other high-ranking members of the COS) REALLY
believe.
Both Lavey and Barton have said some things over the years which seem to hint at a belief in the literal Satan, or at least, some sort of objective spiritual entities.
If so....they obviously just don't want to come out and overtly admit they're not the materialists they've always claimed to be.
On the other hand....Lavey was a man who seemed to enjoy keeping an aura of mystery
about himself.
Thus...the comments i'm referring to could have been deliberate attempts on his part
to maintain and reinforce that aura.
The choice of Satanism was a deliberate one of provocation so I'm sure whenever he hinted at a literal satan, he most likely was doing it out of the same drama club BS just trying to create attention for himself and his up-for-sale angst.
Agreed....he was clever enough to realize that many people are drawn towards
the mysterious.
According to his daughter Zeena, the man was a total fraud and a money-grubbing con artist to begin with.
He sold an idea, a lifestyle, and an image. He was as much a salesman as Billy Mays.
