Orwell, if we must observe and believe that the Tea Party is racist, then let us go on.
Woodrow Wilson, Democrat-NJ president 1913-1921. Openly racist against blacks and Asians. Fought against any civil rights for blacks. Supported, lobbied for, and signed Asian Exclusion Acts, which limited Asians immigration, limited their civil rights even when legally in the US, and expelled Asians from the US, even some that were born here. Supported and signed Espionage Act 1917, an early Patriot Act but worse. Limited right of free political association. Wilson set up concentration camps for Germans, even US citizens. FDR set up camps for Japanese, Italans, Germans. Southern Democrats opposed black civil rights. Democrats like "Bull" Conner assaulted black demonstrators.
Why don't we assume all Democrats are racist.
Democrats are racist. Now, maybe Obama isn't racist against blacks, but he must be racist against Asians. Since Wilson hated Asians, then Obama must. Of course, Obama probably isn't racist, but we must observe the rule that all Democrats are racist.
What a load of bull.
Yeah, Wilson was racist. Just about everyone was racist at the time, especially within the Democratic Party. At that point, the Democratic Party was the party of the KKK. That has exactly zero bearing on modern politics. It was nearly a century ago, and there have been massive paradigm shifts in political alignment since then. Pre-FDR, the Republicans were the more liberal/progressive of the two parties. FDR and later Truman moved the Democratic party to the left and changed the tone of the party in regards to race relations (although there were still Dixiecrat holdouts for decades afterwards) and Nixon and subsequent Republican politicians moved that party to the right, and changed its tone in regard to race relations.
That a number of Tea Partiers are racist is a readily observed fact about modern political discourse. I don't have to embark on some pathetic six-degrees series of associations into long-dead politicians to try to make that case.
On a question of fact: when did FDR set up camps for Italians and Germans? He should be justly condemned for Japanese internment, but don't dilute that horror by making up lies. My Italian grandfather served in the Army during the FDR administration. And Germans? In my hometown, the vast majority are of German descent. I would have heard about it if Germans were persecuted in WWII America.
