That 10% who make up the wealthiest of America won't ever go hungry or homeless if they're taxed just a little more. But cut social programs for those awful poor people who don't pay taxes, and many will go without food and shelter.
I'm just not feeling sorry for that 10% who won't feel that extra taxation.

1. about 51% of the Country does not pay Federal income tax.
2. About 10% pays the bulk of the Federal income tax.
That's actually inviting this country to collapse.
Um, Republicans voted for many of those tax breaks. And they'd like more. Bush cut middle-class taxes as well and almost doubled the child tax credit. All of this, coupled with his stimulus checks, the economic meltdown and a further round of tax credits under Obama led to these kinds of numbers. As rates go down and credits accumulate, you push more people into the no tax zone.
Don't act like it's a mystery. Jesus won't pay the bills if we keep cutting taxes and passing out credits.

As unpopular as it might sound, I think the very best thing that could be done for the country is to cancel every tax cut.

You mean we should stop subsidizing privileged dead beats? What a revolutionary idea.
The salvation of America is Cash and Carry. And some people are going to be very badly hurt under such a plan. But we have dug a hole so deep that there are bound to be innocent victims.
The First Law of the Hole: Stop digging.
The Second Law of the Hole: Put the f'king shovel down.

Forgive me if I misunderstood your post, but with your reference to the Salvation Army, I got the impression you were talking about poorer people. I was actually referring to middle class tax cuts, which in my opinion was nothing more than just expensive crumbs thrown to the masses.

Salvation army, last I checked operates, under a balanced budget. If the Government was a business, everyone in the White House and Congress would be in jail.

A balance budget isn't always possible with federal governments. For instance, we would have lost the Civil War had Lincoln been forced to adhere to a balanced budget. He in fact put us deep into debt to defeat the south, but I don't know of anyone in his right mind (that means racists and neo-confederate morons and the like are excluded) who would think that he made the wrong choice.

That could be addressed in the language of the amendment for situations like the country has been attacked and we are at war, but we can still say the normal spending has to remain like it was a balanced budget.

Actually, we are at war. And as our previous president had taken us into two wars without raising revenue, I would think there would be all the more incentive to put the balanced budget wet dream aside so we can in the meantime get our house back in order.

Bush didn't raise taxes because we were reeling from a recession that started before he took office and 9/11 happened. He actually saw an increase in revenues when he lowered taxes, but Congress increased spending when they saw more money like children running loose in a candy store.

Revenue through lowering taxes? I believe that only happens in the Bizzaro world.
And it should be recalled, both houses of congress were under Republican control in those days. Can't pin this one on the Democrats!
And it should be mentioned that never once have taxes been lowered in war time. The simple fact of the matter is, those tax cuts - especially for the rich - are the cause of our current financial problems, and the sooner they're gone, the better.

It is possible to get more revenue by lowering taxes, you're assuming the economy is remaining constant. When Bush lowered taxes, it spurred economic growth, causing an increase in the tax base, which lead to an increase in revenue because more people had jobs, and thus more people were paying taxes, which more than made up the loss of lowering taxes if the economy had remained constant.
Bush's economy had around 4-5% unemployment for much of his term, it didn't start creaping up until 2007-2008 (when Democrats had control of Congress).
Our current unemployment is officially above 9%, and unofficially at least 17% and probably higher than that. A lot of the people that were paying taxes are now out of work, so we've lost a huge portion of our tax revenue. Bush's tax cuts are not the problem, and raising taxes is only going to hurt this economy more.
All of you people have claimed you know more than me, seems you really don't know as much as you think you do.

I am thinking it through. Bush had been left a surplus by Bill Clinton, as well as a roaring economy, but Bush squandered it.
I fail to understand how ending the tax breaks for the rich are going to hurt the economy, considering that the wealthy recipients of the cuts are hardly being asked to give up very much. On top of that, for all the tax cuts we've given the rich and corporations, when are they going to reciprocate, and start building our economy again? Because from my angle, it looks like the rich are only getting richer at our expense.

They're not going to invest until they know what the rules are, right now it's like playing a game where one of the players can make up the rules as they go along even having rules be retro-active, which is unheard of.
