Christmas would be a good day, since a lot of other people are already in observance, and other atheists seem to be trying to make it happen, with their holiday signs and all.

The theme should be togetherness and observance of the awesomeness of the unknown. But this won't happen because Atheism is too divisive as it is.

After reading my above posts do you think it would still be hard to accomplish given support from all directions for fictional writers such as Adam Atheist?

I'll take any paid days off you wanna give me.

Not the least bit annoyed that my catholic overlords gave me Good Friday off with pay.

I'm just slightly annoyed that i ended up celebrating a very religious easter this year.

Catholic Overlord Day! We could all pretend for our children's sake on a surprise day once during a child's lifetime that we were being martyred by religion and losing everything we have. That religion was taking their parents away to force religion on our children!

It's genius, it'll keep the christfags away from our kids and keep them from being indoctrinated into believing in acceptable losses.

Would be nice to have a holiday around the same time as Christmas and Hannukah, so that children in Atheist or Agnostic families would not feel left out.

Most xmas celebrations here in the US are so devoid of religious content that I am sure many atheist families partake. They just leave out the religious parts. How many people know that "Santa Claus" was originally a skinny guy named "Saint Nicholas?" There are lots of secular xmas carols, for example. Some might object, but turnabout is fair play. "Christmas" absorbed pagan traditions like the Borg absorbed planets,

The secular version could be called xmas instead of Christmas. Hmmm, they are both pronounced the same, so maybe we need a new name for it. "The winter solstice holiday" is a little wordy. Any ideas?

The birth of Chris Math who had a lisp and everyone called Chris Mass! He could be an atheist write that we could all attribute work to! This way when our kids are asked if they celebrate "Christmas," they can say yes! Though this is of course social pretense, but if it protects my kid from being traumatized in order to force religion upon them, it's okay.

Why not celebrate the seasons? That's what our pre-Christian ancestors did. Winter solstice, the beginning of spring, the end of the harvest... coming to think of it, we are already doing that. Xmas = winter solstice. Easter = spring / fertility celebration (with bunnies and eggs as fertility symbols). Thanksgiving = harvest festival. One can celebrate these days and honor these ancient traditions without worshipping any gods or goddesses.

I think I finally figured out what would be the perfect atheist holiday. The Flying Spaghetti Monster"s birthday! When was that?

Fits nicely with my idea to highjack the holidays :)

I can't speak for LKL, but I personally wouldn't change my opinion on such an important topic just to be friends with someone on the Internet.

We could have non-holidays to go with our non-beliefs :)

Does Holiday really come from "Holy Day?" I think this is the first time I've ever made the connection.

You just gave me an idea for a catchy name for the "winter solstice holiday:"
Holly Day!

We can celebrate holly. We can be sure it actually exists!

The planet is saved, once again by atheists.

Praise the non-believe in the concept of God!

Excellent idea! I can actually celebrate something that exists and feel good about it!
