That's also the case in private, face-to-face life. One of my neighbors in my apartment complex is decent sort of guy, is fighting cancer, and so has to be on public assistance. He and I get along just fine - - till politics comes up. Then all of a sudden, he thinks the left might as well be out to destroy the country, and quite possibly has risen from the depths of hell. I've tried to tell him that neither he nor I am going to change the others mind, but he keeps flapping his gums as if he hasn't heard me. I have to think, this neighbor would be quite a bit more likable had we as country not been convinced that politics are a black and white issue, and that the other side is completely evil.

TBH, I was putting up with far right memes for over a year before I responded in kind, then all the others who hadn't said anything to begin with responded to me, it was a mess.

Thanks for the link Dox47, it's a shame that we've become so polarized, but like they say, the first step to tackling a problem is admitting there is a problem.

You are essentially right (although some votes are worth more than others because of how close a seat is, so like in the 2000 American election a party can win the popular vote and still lose, though this is unlikely with three or more serious parties). What about in the Senate and Congress? You currently only have two independents in the Senate, no Libertarians or Greens or other minor parties.

The same fear of splitting the vote that grips the American public in presidential elections also applies in senator and representative elections. Each county only gets one representative, and since Senators are elected one at a time there is only one winner in those elections too. electing senators in tandem might be a step in the right direction as at would give third party and independent candidates a better chance.

if only the gop would get wise and stop dumping on the working class and gays. stop with the opposition to working-class health care. then the 47% might be more receptive to the rest of their message.

Did you read my link on politicization? The GOP is not the problem here, the problem is the whole damn system.
