I have tried to look for some kind of links explaining who this guy is but have been unable to find anything. Do we know he was a CIA agent? I mean, maybe he was. If somebody can find a link let me know. It just seems odd. When a KGB defector outs himself I would think I would be able to find something more then just links to videos explaining how the KGB are interested in yoga.

There is very little information on Bezmenov. His full name is Yuri Alexandrovich Bezmenov. He is also known as Thomas Schuman. I doubt he is a CIA agent. In his interviews he is very critical of the American system. I can’t imagine why the CIA would plant someone to propagandize against the U.S.

Quote:
Thomas Schuman was a communist official who lived in Russia. During trips to the Moscow airport he noticed private American jets landing, the occupants hugged by high ranking communist officials, and then whisked away in government vehicles. When he asked his supervisor about the Americans he was told that "they are our friends" and that it would be best if he didn't inquire further about such matters. Eventually he came to the conclusion that the apparent conflict between communism and capitalism was contrived, and that wealthy capitalists were working closely with high-ranking communists. That realization led him to defect from the Soviet Union. [18]

Quote:
A panel of distinguished journalists, including Reed Irvine of ACCURACY IN MEDIA, intensively questioned "Thomas Schuman" [Yuri Alexandrovich Bezmenov], a Russian defector who caused immense damage to the KGB by revealing the extent to which Russian "sleepers" and left-wing sympathizers had been "planted" in journalistic and editorial positions throughout the American and Canadian media. Stories favourable to the Communist cause are given wide coverage; articles and book reviews which are unfavourable, however, are quietly "spiked" and allowed to "die." In the process, the typical North American"s thoughts and attitudes are subtly shaped and directed by a constant stream of carefully-crafted "disinformation."

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Most devastating to the KGB's attempts to penetrate the media is the testimony of Thomas Schuman, aka Yuri A. Bezmenov, a former Novosti Press Agency reporter who defected in 1970.
"The James Bond era is over," says Schuman. Soviet-bloc agents "can take Western secrets for free" from declassified publications, "and big industrialists want to give them the technological information" so they'll buy American.

The video I posted on demoralization is just one part of G. Edward Griffin’s interview with Bezmenov. A half-hour of this tape is available on Youtube divided into six parts. Hopefully when I get to viewing it I will know more about Yuri Bezmenov.

propaganda for russia. do you really believe that everyone who "defected" really defected? you need to have at least a little cynicism about you if you want to get anywhere. especially considering just how in depth the cold war really got in terms of misinformation distributed by both sides and active kgb agents that are still in and around canada and the US today.

there's a reason why i hate putin...and it isn't just because his name sounds like a crappy canadian dish.

I don't consider it brainwashing by any active malign entity so much as a negative side affect of freedom. If more people know about the winner of American Idol than the history of their own country or where Afghanistan is then that is their right to do so, whether we like it or not (and for the record I really don't, considering my love of world history).

I will say that, in my opinion, the major problem in the US is a growing pessimism fueled by narcissistic shortsightedness. A multitude of ignorant doomsayers just rise out of the wood work assuring us that the end is coming on an increasingly regular basis. War has never been so bad as it is now and we will most assuredely destroy ourselves in a blaze of nuclear fire? BS. Our world has shown amazing restraint and maturity compared to how the nations of old fought their wars. Our respect for human rights and our striving to understand the motives of our enemies rather than demonize them has improved substantially, though we have some ways to go no doubt. The weather is going crazy and we have a short time before we all die from the global warming we created and/or judgement day? Have some faith in a species that has evolved from hunters and gatherers to one which climbed to the heavens and touched the moon in a very short time. As far as enviromentalism goes, we are doing better and better as time goes on. Both the political Left and Right are bad about breeding pessimism to make political points and it angers me to no end. Anytime someone wants to make a little money they just hit the panic button and feed off the misinformed masses. If anything we should be optimistic about our future, not as americans but as a species because the more I think about it, the more I am beginning to believe that this is a world wide epidemic.

Yes. Most people have defected from the east (unfree) to the west (free). There are also examples of people defecting the other way. Many of them often wanted to return, and when possible have (I wish Lee Harvey Oswald hadn't). The Eastern bloc countries were very suspicious of would be defectors.

The information gained from defectors from the communist bloc was critical in the Cold War.

The most notable defector for the Soviets came from the Stalin era, British double agent Kim Philby.

The problem with that conclusion is it requires that the CIA was incompetent in its interrogation of Bezmenov after he defected and failed to sniff him out. The possibility that you or I could accurately make that assessment from our computers when CIA couldn't, with all of its knowledge and experience, is very remote.

This actually depends a lot on where in the EU or, for that matter, the US you happen to go. One of the reasons I get a little annoyed with conservatives who boast about our economic prosperity is that our economy is actually hedged up in a few of the most liberal parts of the country. We have entire states that would be considered "developing countries" if they weren't part of the Union. I imagine you could say the same thing for Canada, actually.
Nope, none of that nature. All of our states are quite fine economically. The lowest GSP per capita is $27,829 in Mississippi. The Canadian GDP per capita in 2004 was $29,866. Now unless you are going to argue that the entire nation of Canada is on the border of being a developing nation, I really think you need to adjust your argument. Not only that but many of the top state economies did vote right in the 2004 presidential election. Considering that the businessmen who make the money are the ones more likely to vote right in all of the states, I would not consider conservatives really anti-economy here.

That's pretty much what I say of the US.
Definitely true. The US is not at its full potential.

Actually, I've known a few Canadians who complained about their experiences with your healthcare system.

Well, I think not so much "lazy" as short on morale.
Americans are hard working all things considered. We do have an obesity problem but considering the work hours put in and all of that, I don't see much in terms of laziness.

The US wins by far. European nations all tend to be below us. I have the statistics to prove everything I say Griff. Don't consider me delusional by any measure because I know what I am talking about.

As for political lean, just look at what nations spend more on their military:
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/mil_e ... ent-of-gdp

No developed nation other than Israel, which has a constant threat of war, has a greater expenditure on military. Is high military spending a right wing trait? Yes.

Economic freedom: what nation is better than the European average? The US. Is an emphasis on economic freedom a right wing trait? Yes.

Your claims tend to be invalid Griff and your delusional BS annoys me.

The more people I hear about the brainwashing of the nation convinces me more and more that our nation is brainwashed. We are brainwashed to consider ourselves brainwashed.

Perhaps in some manner, but I am not sure. Neo-conservatism is a reaction to the idea that we will eat away our national strength and it hopes to retain that strength. I suppose they are destructive in their own manner but they are more a reaction to the threat of demoralization than they are a group of the demoralized.

the demoralization lies in their abuse of religion in politics. their self-righteous tone might claim morality but it's just chest-beating BS. and if you want a group that lives in la-la land, look no further than the neoconservative movement which is founded on the idea of the noble lie. there is no such noble lie. ignorance only leads to trouble.

On the other side of our system this pc trend has became like a religion in itself, and also highly fanatical. They seem to blindly follow delusional thinking, often not being able to acknowledge that people don't make the facts, often ignoring facts out of fear or fear-based propaganda, in general it operates on the idea that if we let the minorities script flip us and accept that white hetero males are "evil demons", then somehow we fix history  ,and allow a minority to get away with any damn thing they feel like JUST because of their minority status. I see this going bad places too. Minority status should not be a free ticket to break the laws.

I had a real long post written for this thread but as far as I'm reading I think it was better off hitting the delete button. A lot of things bother me about the original post but it looks like everyone is doing a good job at taking this apart. We live in a world where people largely want to be left alone and live their lives without interference - some people understand the price that has to be paid for that, some don't.
