All I know is that I'm tired of settlers who smell like stale Kraft Dinner and boiled pennies telling me I should hate people because they smell like curry instead.

The two attitudes seem highly related to me. I am hard pressed to think of a reason to be anti immigration that is not rooted in some form of racism.

We have ramen here too, but KD is more like a national stereotype than merely a poverty food. That's why I compared it to Vegemite in Australia, they're both national stereotypes, both internally and abroad.

the vegemite thing is dated, like saying Aussies all eat spam. Once upon a time vegemite on toast for breakfast and spam and eggs were a staple with fish and chips on Fridays and Roast beef on Sundays.

People still eat vegemite (my daughter likes it on toast) but its nowhere near as popular now.

Do all Canadians have maple syrup and pancakes for breakfast?

No, there won't be room for KD for lunch. :P

The vegemite thing might be dated, but that's somewhat besides the point. The KD thing would still be a national stereotype even if it becomes outdated at some point. Tropes like that can last as stereotypes even if they've become outdated.

Yeah it's difficult to get my head around too you're probably right to large extent but there must be exceptions to this rule

I asked this question because it's something I'm trying to grapple with in my personal life with someone who I'm quite near to

It's getting to the point where I might have to break contact with them

If they just owned the fact that they are racists then I might be able to work with that but it's the hypocrisy I'm struggling with (if hypocrisy is the right word)

It's my dad btw and I've only just found him after 50 years so this isn't an easy thing for me to have on my mind

Thanks guys

I think the root of it comes from how way more people acknowledge racism as being morally wrong than actually care to do any uncomfortable self-examination over how it might impact their views or priorities.

I've noticed a lot of people are two faced on these sorts of matters to, they'll be quite decent to other people's faces but hostile when it comes to policies and attitudes. It's good that they're decent face-to-face, but it seems underhanded to be hateful to people behind their backs but smile to their faces.

Not heard the KD thing before? I imagine the French Canadians wouldn't stoop to eating less than 1 Michelin star cuisine?

Overseas people I've met tend to think Australians eat a lot of BBQ meat. We definitely are a nation of meat eaters.

I'd associate French Canada with poutine more than haute cuisine.
