Australian media probably paints an ultra-conservadox religious State ready to flood the world with intellectual darkness or some other item of damnation. America is far from that, at least what I've seen of it.

No, just as a mish-mash of left and right-wing attitudes where members of the same party will hurl overt insults at each other (Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama, I am looking at you) while nutjobs such as Fred Phelps run loose, and freedoms of individuals takes precedence over proper altruism, and religion is venerated more than science.

I have not a clue who Fred Phelps is. Liberty isn't what is held above altruism, money is. And science pseudonumos is venerated more than religion, particularly over Christianity.

I don't know what word you just said, unless you spelt 'pseudonymous' wrong. Look up Fred Phelps on Wikipedia, and see what is wrong with religion in America.

Sorry, I should have said 'liberty AND money is held in higher regard than altruism'.

In context it is gnostos pseudonumos. Prevailing views of "science" do hold higher ground than "religion". Really though, you seem to be arguing against freedom of speech if you think the opposition should be silenced.

Ah Phelps is against homosexuality, therefore he should be silenced too.

No liberty is overridden by wealth. You find very few free men in entry-level jobs.

He is a homophobe, in the literal sense. Phelps' church is a hate group.

Ah, another terms to add to my vocabulary. You have my thanks, iamnotaparakeet. This will certainly be a better meme than 'more cowbell'.

No, what I am arguing against is this tendency to ask for freedoms without the freedom to take the consequences. God may not be judged, but men who claim that they are above the law because of 'divine favour' can, will, and MUST be judged.

And against America. Haven't you noticed? If he was just a plain, ornery, common or garden homophobe, then I could safely ignore him. But to promote that much hate, to everyone but themselves, I think that Phelps should've been deleted long ago. He hates gays, he hates America to the point that he cheers every time a soldier is killed overseas, or every time a civilian perishes in a natural disaster. And if you think he is worthy of support, then my opinion of you will plummet.

Tell that to all those people who lost money in Enron, and all those companies that failed. How long did these execs spend in prison, for contributing, even minutely, to the deaths of thousands of people?

And by that, I mean, people who commit suicide, whose stress over the investments shortens their lifespan, or are made homeless and more prey to the hazards of life?

One of the best of the worst is Jack Van Impe and his wife Rexella. I was forced to go to one of their "crusades" at the McCormick Center in Chicago when I was a kid. He has been predicting Christ's imminent return for 40 years. "He's coming back now . . . I mean, now . . . OK then, how about . . . now . . . ?

Sad thing is that they are still on television and people are still sending them money.

That Jesus is returning soon is cause for great excitement, which is why it occasionally breeds excitability, so that Christ's soon return is sometimes predicted with more precision than the Bible actually utilizes. Jesus Himself said, "No man knoweth the day or the hour" of His return, so modern self-appointed "prophets" should take great care, and get back to reading and teaching Scripture.

I totally agree with you Ragtime! However, Van Impe claims to have memorized much of the Bible and so he knows the scripture. I just think what he choses to emphasize and the predictions can do more harm than good.

Hate to break it to you Marty, but your vid doesn't work. I love watching televangelists tripping over prejudice and attempting to collect money too, and I am sorry to not be able to see this.

to atheists: ever notice whenever you get into an argument with a hardcore religious person, they always start talking about freedom of speech or religion as soon as they start losing or can no longer justify themselves in logical terms?

Televangelism is not religion; it's showbusiness. These people are as sleazy as anyone in showbusiness.

True, Joel Osteen seems to be a very decent man. I don't like the whole preaching for money etc. but he's definitely not a Pastor Hagee.

What about Creflo Dollar? A black man. He's a televangelist, and his name really is Dollar. He doesn't smell like all the others. He seems like a genuinely good guy. I saw him interviewed on THE HOUR by Strombo.

Almost nothing makes me cringe more than Televangelists. Don't these guys make you feel sick to your stomach? They claim that they believe in god and that they have seen visions of God. Also, they claim that they can heal you if you make donations of money to them. I've been seeing this "Peter Popoff" guy late at night on infomercials and he really makes me sick to my stomach. I just read on Wikipedia that he earns $500, 000 dollars a year from donations, and he drives a 2006 Porsche convertible worth $90,000.

Check out this link at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Popoff

Religion is one of the Most effective ways to get your hands on other peoples money  . Just look at the Mormons for example! They're filthy rich and now they're using all their wealth to gain (political)power. Besides, you know who that old saying goes: "A Fool and his money are soon parted" .

Mesmerized or mesmerizing?

Most of the world's people are poor. What would a televangelist want with poor people? No money, no miracle.

It's the idea that the poor are more likely to be religious and are less likely to question absolute authority, so they'll give their money to an organization thinking God is going to bless them when in fact they are literally buying the people a horse ranch or a new porsche. They give money because some televangelists will say "if you donate $50 or more, God will give it back to you tenfold" and if they have a need- say they are mortally sick, their kids are doing drugs, or theyre about to lose their home, they'll give their money to the televangelists thinking God will rewrd their generosity. Now if every other viewer were to give 50 bucks or more, it's easy to see how some will get filthy rich. I think it's okay to give to organizations that will feed starving kids, but the fact is that there are so many people who are just really naive. But who's to blame here, the ignorant masses or the people who take advantage of them? I kind of liken it taking money from a helpless relative with dementia because they cant remember if they gave to you earlier or not.
