what happened to the good old exorcisms, sprinkling with holy water and all? :P

The Catholic Church doesn't perform those anymore. Except for a few extremely rare modern cases, exorcism has gone the way of trepanation and bloodletting.

you'd be surprised... they still do it big time in rural areas of Eastern Europe.

I think an even better topic to think on is why exorcisms even existed at all, let alone exist in our day. Were they valid at one point? Of course not.

Much like slavery and blood sacrifice once were, this is one of the many things the barbaric religions of the Levant do for no real reason at all except to fantasize and authoritize the religion - forgiving the fact that the savages actually believe in it.

of course, they still are. their power lies in the suggestion (possesion being a self-suggested state), placebo effect at it's best.

Canada is a multicultural society with many cultures and religions. We are not a melting pot. Rather, we are a mosaic. Maybe we did have Christianity as our official religion once upon a time, but that is certainly no longer the case. I live in a very multicultural province, Ontario.

Bah, looking through my notes, I was wrong, I apologize - apparently my brain isn't wanting to work today. It's Sweden that still has the state church, not Canada. But Canada still has no protection against government endorsement of religion, not to mention Clause 33.

Someone who lacks the belief that gods do not exist. Most atheists lack the belief that god does not exist. There is no word for this one.

We also have no protection against government endorsement of crooks & liars. Since we are multicultural and each culture tends to have a specific religion attached to it, it's difficult if not impossible to protect our government from religious influence. The Ontario Catholics got their own school board, but no other religious group did. Is it fair? Not really. Efficient? Not especially. When every group clamours for recognition at the same time, it can get pretty messy.

I've always thought that Canada was at risk of becoming too multicultural and losing our national identity in the process.

See, that's the whole point of the establishment clause in Article 6 of the U.S. Const. The only proper position for the state to take is a stance of religious neutrality (secular gov't, secular values). Relating to religion and law, either you allow everyone to do something or no one to do something. Granted, American dumbasses forget this a lot, resulting in people like me trying to clean up everyone else's mess.

Nah there's actually quite a few of us up here on the non-dumbass pedestal. We have English tea times and chess tournaments are on Wednesdays.

Actually, we do. Canada is not a theocracy. Americans, just admit you don't know sh*t about us.

*Waves hand* I don't know jack s**t about Canada! I have no understanding of their culture, politics, economics, history, or foreign relations despite having grown up around a fair number of Canucks.

There you go. :D

I'm not a fan of tea, but can I come for the chess tournaments?
