IMO the fact that Obama is mixed race has simply been used as positive PR. The whole election has been a boost to America's image across the world. This is something I think would be very difficult to achieve if the new man had been another white Christian.
I do agree that there is such a thing as white guilt, especially since WW2 and the civil rights movement. It is almost a crime to be white these days, blacks can be proud to be black but whites who pride their identity are often sterotyped as racist scum. Not that skin colour is anything to be proud of anyway but you get the picture. IMO special interest groups are providing momentum for this cultural shift, just as they are removing 'offensive' symbols of christianity in day to day life. I'll probably get in trouble for going any deeper on the issue and who I think is really behind it, so I'll leave it there.
BTW I am mixed race myself.
