Don't confuse libertarianism with the Libertarian Party. There is a reason why there is the term "small l libertarian". They only represent a tiny minority of the movement and they lost a lot of credibility when they nominated Bob Barr last time. Ron saw through him and didn't endorse him last time and now Barr has become a traitor once again and endorsed Newt Gingrich this time around. That party is dysfunctional and ran by incompetents.

When Ron was apart of the party in 1988, it was the Murray Rothbard/Lew Rockwell wing of the party that won him it's nomination not the unprincipled Koch bro's wing.

Now I personally see no problem with "phas[ing] out the current government-sponsored Social Security system and transition[ing] to a private voluntary system,"

I do see a major problem with it.

That is the Repugnican's current strategy--promise current retirees that they can keep their social security, while ending it for people younger than 55, who won't know what hit them, because 7 years ahead is too far away for them to think about. The money to pay the current retirees will have to come from somewhere--if not from present social security taxes, then from increased income taxes or increased debt.

That said, you've yet to establish that Ron Paul wants to phase out Social Security. Was that part of the Libertarian platform in 1988? And more importantly, has Ron Paul indicated that eliminating Social Security is currently one of his goals?

I presume that you both know more about him than I do, and have a keener interest in him. You tell me. He did characterize Social Security and unconstitutional, and akin to slavery. That kind of language isn't going to garner a whole lot of support from Democrats in the general election. Remember that George Bush had a secret plan to end Social Security, and he didn't announce his plan until after he was re-elected.
