I believe gods do not exist.
You lack the belief in God's existence. Your belief is that God doesn't exist.

Atheists do not believe gods exist.
Correct, but that doesn't mean that atheists have non-position regarding God. Their belief that God doesn't exists is precisely their belief, and many will deny that.

This is literally the definition of the word.
Sure, and many atheists will say that it means they have no position regarding God, but that isn't true.
If you hold that atheism is a lack of belief, meaning that the belief in the nonexistence of God doesn't count as a belief, then you are a baby.

I'm not arguing the definition, I'm arguing how some atheists interpret it.
I'm arguing that people can't say they have a non-belief/non-position. Atheism is defined, in many instances, as having a lack of belief. Many atheists will go out on a limb and say they don't have a belief at all. In the case of that definition, grown-ups cannot be an atheist, because they don't have a non-belief. It's absurd to think someone can say "I don't believe in God and that is my non-belief."

unbelief in God or deities
And atheists will go out on a limb and say that it also presumes that belief in the nonexistence of God isn't a belief in itself.

lack of belief
Lack of belief is what a baby has.

If you fail to comprehend what that means, that is not anyone’s fault but your own. But defining Atheism otherwise or claiming it is something different than that is incorrect.
When atheists claim that atheism signifies they have a non-belief/non-position regarding the existence of God, they are wrong. They do have one, even though it's not a belief for existence, it's in the nonexistence.
