It is genuinely sad watching the debate in US politics at the moment. It would be funny but which ever candidate you pick and neither would I believe would get even close to being elected in most european countries they are likely to seriously impact the world economy and not in a good way. America needs to rediscover its democratic roots and stop being led by the uber rich and the quest for the almighty dollar.

My best guess - and I must assume I am biased - is corporatism. To a large degree we've acceded our government to non-human people - including corporations, NPO's, churches, etc. - any group that has "free speech" via donations, but acts as a shield for the very real individual humans who control it.

The system worked when companies had to be chartered with the state for a single purpose for the good of all that could not be done otherwise and then disbanded afterward. They've been replaced with corporations, which are somehow granted much of the benefits of personhood yet act at the behest of their owners. In other words, all the benefits with few of the responsibilities to other people. Couple that with legislators who are essentially owned by the highest bidder and abuse is inevitable.

Zero sum game mentality is an important reason.
