White people are inferior neanderthal? Video comments 0.o
This is quite the educational thread. I didn't know any of that (excluding the severe ignorance of racists about anything science related).

And yet my dumb ass dad says Charles Darwin created the theory of evolution to justify racism and eugenics.
He says it's written into The Origin of Species. Funny that he should claim to have knowledge of a book he's never read. I'm going to give him that book so he can see that it says nothing about human races.

Before evolutionary biology came around, most racists believed that the "savage races" were the cursed descendants of Ham.
If evolution had been "made up to justify racism" it would have been created much earlier.

I am just glad I overcame the Bible Belt's brainwashing or else I would still be sitting on my ass waiting for God's "plan" to happen for me as well as thinking evolution isn't real. I would also think Christianity is under attack despite how there are Christian terrorists such as the Lord's Resistance Army, National Liberation Front of Tripura, and the National Socialist Council of Nagaland who Bible Belters either don't know about or pretend don't exist.
Both white and black supremacists tend to be rednecks and ghetto thugs but the ironic reality is that redneck and ghetto thugs have more in common than they'll ever admit. They both like drinking until they pass out, smoking until their nostrils burn, watching football religiously, driving dangerously, treating women terribly, calling LGBT people "fa***ts", and saying "Only God can judge me!" as if God treats them with favortism. The only differences between them are that rednecks prefer country music, cowboy clothes, and trucks while ghetto thugs prefer rap music, baggy clothes, and cadillacs.
... I don't even know what to say to that... wtf is a "real Jew"??? .... yep at a loss for words here.
The issue of who is a "real jew", or the biogical or cultural descendants of the ancient Israelites is a hotly debated topic with many facets.
Many anti-semites insist that Ashkenazi jews are not real jews because they insist that Ashkenazi jews decend from Khazar converts. Whether or not Ashkenazi jews have Khazar origins has not been definitively resolved but in judaism it's irrelevant because if the Khazars did convert and the Ashkenazim sprung forth from them, they are valid jews (with some exceptions) by all sects of judaism practiced by Ashkenazi people. Anti-semites remain blind to this fact because the focus on the race issue and the fact that in judaism, jewishness can be inherited from the parent (the mother in conservative and orthodox rabbinical judaism, either parent in reform rabbinical judaism, and the father in karaite judiasm and among Ethiopian jews). But for most jewish sects, a person's biological relation to the ancient Israelites is actually irrelevant and converts are seen as full jews. The one exception pertains to the priestly class of the Kohanim, or Cohens as they are sometimes called. In rabbinical judaism, this status is inherited soley through the paternal line and can be lost if one marries jews who fall into certain categories, converts being one of them. This isn't because a convert is any less of a jew. It's because the convert may have commited an act or experienced a situation before conversion that would disqualify them from marrying a Kohen if they were born a jew, and the convert's history is thought to be less certain than those born a jew in a jewish community.

Seriously? Sounds like a test of patience, talking to him about anything related to it.

Wow. Well, congrats on not being stuck in that mire.
I couldn't agree more. They're so alike it's absolutely entertaining sometimes. It must be exhausting, living in that much denial.

Woah. Those are some pretty serious rules. Admittedly I don't have a taste for religion. I find the similarities between the major religions fascinating and I tend to cross reference them out of hobby-like study. But I can't say I've ever felt the merits of religion are significant enough to outweigh the very damaging psychology inherent within. I think Judaism is probably the most interesting for the sole fact that no one is racially/ethnically "Christian", "Buddhist", etc and the culture of it all seems incredibly complex.

I'm Jewish, because my mother is Jewish. All the people from my mother's ancestral line, as far as I know, are Jewish.
I'm now sure about one "Jewish" ethnicity. Jewish people are divided, for the most part, into "Sephardic" and "Ashkenazi." But only "the most part." Obviously, there are Jews from other areas, such as the Ethiopian Jews.
The Sephardic Jews come from the Mediterranean region; the Ashkenazi from eastern Europe/Western Asia. Many Sephardim were kicked out of Spain in 1492.
The Ashkenazi have Yiddish as their primary language. It is a dialect of medieval German, for the most part. It is written in Hebrew letters. They came to the United States in droves in the late 19th-early 20th century, primarily because of the "pogroms" which took place in Russia and other eastern European places. "Pogroms" were massacres of Jews by the authorities of whatever country they occurred.
If one sees "Fiddler on the Roof," one of the police officers of the area near the shtetl (village) of the main characters warned the residents of a coming pogrom. That gave them time to pack their bags, and head for many places. The village was burnt down to the ground.
My maternal grandmother came to Ellis Island in New York City in 1910. She was six years old. The family had to find some way to get from what is now Belarus to Lithuania, where many ships sailed from. It's possible they were able to take the railroad; it is also possible that they walked all the way. When they got to Ellis Island, all their names were "Americanized" by the authorities. On the boat, she had a Yiddish name.

My maternal grandmother's maiden name was Abramovske, but she and her family were Prussian Lutherans. Obviously, someone along the line converted.

Thanks for the quick lesson Kortie.
As a random aside, I often wonder if my Grandfather was in fact Jewish and not Mexican-Irish as is claimed. The family records are either missing/destroyed/incomplete for his side of the family. I've never seen photos, and no one in the family seems to know much about his history growing up. He was also a Catholic, but he always wore a golden Star of David except for times were he seemed to deem it prudent not to wear it. His facial structure also lacks several identifying features of both Mexican and Irish.

My grandmother's maiden name was "Feldman." Her married name was "Beckenstein."
She was born in 1904, and passed away in 1993.
The immediate ancestors of my grandmother were urban dwellers, living in what is now Minsk, Belarus. Beyond my grandmother, everything is really obscure. It seems like my great-grandfather came to New York before 1900, had an apartment there, then sent for the rest of the family around 1910.
I don't ask my mother too much about these people; there were traumas associated with these people.
I hear you. Same reason I never asked my family about their pasts and histories. Things were hard for them. It seemed unfair to make them relive those times simply to satisfy my curiosity.

It was the exact opposite for me. My dad filled my head with family history. Not all of it was happy, but it's still my family's history.

That sounds satisfying. I know very, very little about my family's history on either side. They truly didn't want to speak about it much. Most of it is secondhand information from my parents that they were told by their parents. There's virtually nothing about my Mother's Irish family. We don't even know what part of Ireland my great grandfather came from, we just know he came over around the time of the famine. I have no idea about her Mother's parents, I knew they were farmers here but other than knowing they came from Scotland and Ireland we have no idea about anything else.

It was a hard time----the 19th and early 20th century.
People tend to have traumas which they really don't want to discuss. My grandmother had some--some of which caused her to lose much of her "Jewishness" and start celebrating Christmas.
My mother has some, too.
Every time I used to watch the "Honeymooners" as a young kid, I used to really get the feeling that the characters really suffered. I had a great uncle, Julius, who looked (and dressed) just like Ed Norton.
