Glad I Don't Live In America.
Speaking of Cuba, I'd rather not move to a country that locks homosexuals up in concentration camps to be raped, beaten, and killed. Like Fidel Castro did when he was still alive.
Sorry, ain't happening.
I don't advise you to move to Cuba but I'm not certain what you said about them jibes with the article I linked to here, although you may have information that sheds doubt on the credibility of this Reuters article from May:
Havana dons giant rainbow flags in key year for Cuban LGBT+ rights
I was referring to Cuba's treatment of homosexuals under Fidel Castro while he was still alive. The laws may have changed recently but what Fidel did was disgustingly cruel AND he was admired by some of the same leftists in our country who claim to support LGBTQ rights. So talk about irony!

https://www.thedailybeast.com/fidel-cas ... gay-rights
I am inclined to doubt that many self-described Leftists in the US really admire Fidel Castro. It's a tough subject to discuss because Fidel gained a lot of support from various people worldwide because they admired him for thumbing his nose at the US and getting away with it. During the Cold War, there was a lot of anti-US feeling in the West, I think a lot of this was encouraged by educators, many of whom may have even been Communists especially in Italy and France which had large Communist parties. What I mean is, that Fidel (and Che Guevara, think of the Motorcycle Diaries) always had a positive image in those places but it's unlikely the average person there knew very much about their actual careers.
Canada is a special case. For some reason, Pierre Elliott Trudeau (the current PM's father) when he himself was PM, had a bromance with Fidel and sometimes hung out with him in Cuba. So it apparently became sort of a Canadian thing to be sympathetic to the Cuban govt., again most likely without much real knowledge of the situation on the part of the average person.
I guess when I say it's complicated, what I mean is that Fidel is sometimes seen as a person Americans resent because he humiliated us, and therefore we shouldn't accept at fact value everything negative we are told here about his career.
But to repeat, I suspect only a small fraction of self-identified Leftists in the US truly admire him, although some might be impatient with having him used as an example of why we should oppose Socialism (whatever you happen to mean by that term).
Meh, I think dictators are dictators.

People around the world and in our own country are always quick to harshly judge the US over every single mistake we've ever made yet you've also got people around the world who admire monsters like Fidel, Mao, and Stalin who were well known for their cruelty and oppression of their own people who were fleeing their countries to seek refuge here in the US. Why do some people side with them? Because they stood up to the epitome of evil, racism, and capitalism better known as Ammmmuuurrriicccaaaa.

And people wonder why I claim to be a misanthrope? I just dont get stoopid humans!

I'm of the unpopular opinion that BLM and MAGA are both tearing this country apart.

Historically, the idea of America is *personal freedom from government*.
own a gun <--freedom
say hateful things about others <--freedom
individual medical insurance <--freedom
starve to death as a homeless person <--freedom
These are freedoms you may not find in countries like Canada, and the UK.

My mum went to America a couple of times but back then I had no idea about the amount of shootings that go on, and now that I do know, I'm so glad she's decided not to go back.
Also some things over there are the opposite to they are here. Like people think that quiet, expressionless people are dangerous, but in the UK it's the opposite - people trust the quiet people and they think that the more loud, charming, emotionally expressive people are more dangerous. So over here walking around in public keeping yourself to yourself and looking emotionless is actually the done thing, and if you're on your own and express a hint of emotion people stare at you.
And school shootings are so normal over there that they have school shooting drills! In my whole 13 years at school we have never had to do that, all we had were fire drills. Anyway, why do people have to shoot schoolchildren? Absurd country. Glad I live in the UK where more things make sense.
I would rather live in the US and have a Second Amendment that gives lawful gun owners (we aren't talking about the nutcases who go around shooting up schools) the right to defend themselves when needed than live over there in the UK where crime is even more rampant, from what I hear. As for things making more sense across the pond? Right...because turning in kitchen knives to prevent knife attacks is really making a whole lot of sense. Evil people will find ways of spreading evil; I would rather be able to protect myself with a gun than a knife.

Legal gun ownership has been part of America since it's inception and it's not going to change. I own six. Also I know there are plenty of homeless in the UK, Canada, France, and other places that hate America as a backwards Western nation. The wait lists on concuil houses are years long and they aren't free anyway.
the freedom vs security spectrum
lock everyone in their homes <--less freedom, fewer people die
control what people eat <--less freedom, less obesity, fewer people die
ban cars <--less freedom, fewer people die
America is about more freedom, less security, so as you point out, more individual hardships.
However, the alternatives are scary.

Freedom to be a death cult.

In a David Pakman segment yesterday talking about vaccines, he referenced some mandated vaccine law from ~1918 where the US Supreme Court ruled that freedoms granted under the constitution stopped when said freedom impacted someone else' safety, and thus the mandatory vaccine law stood in order to protect others. Apparently that vaccine mandate law is probably going to become a hot topic as time rolls forward and the current Pandemic Of The Unvaccinated needs to end asap.
You'd think the same application of the law would apply to things like lockdowns, vehicle operation etc - you're free to do your thing just so long as it's not negatively impacting others. Sounds reasonable.

I believe the underlying purpose of the curfew they had in Quebec last winter was to restrict socializing as that was probably the most important way in which the virus was spread. Not sure if this is relevant to what you just said.
A lot depends on where you live in America.Rural, suburbs or urban.
In rural areas the crime is low, even with high gun ownership.People may be poor in income ,but many own their own land so have no rent.It might be a crappy trailer house ,but it’s theirs’s.They can grow a garden, pick berries ,hunt or fish to save money on groceries.Cut firewood to sell and burn for heat.No water bill if you have a well or spring.Property taxes are lower. No building inspection so you can build what you want in some places.I’ve never seen a homeless person or panhandler in my small town.
My medicine and all medical bills are paid so I can’t complain about that.I also have a medical marijuana card.
I have several guns and they are tools.I’ve had to put down a few sick deer and it was more humane than letting them stagger around dying.
On the downside ,our gas is a bit higher and you will drive a least an hour to get to a hospital.Everything closes after nine so you better not need gas or ciggs.
If you get badly hurt in a remote area you may ride in the air-evac helicopter instead of an ambulance to the hospital.
We have one grocery store so shopping is limited.
The roads can be bad, mine kept sliding off it they finally fixed it.Rural areas have small budgets so it might take awhile to get things fixed.
